I tried the new site but it's just awful, you have to click on a post number just to enter a thread and there's no way to hide shit threads. Clicking on pictures makes them disappear as well.

/kind/ has a custom stylesheet on the beta. Check it out. Does it look as terrible?

Most people don't like the look of Next. But it's one downgrade for actually being able to post and have a working index page.

Not him but for a start I dislike that next cant embed youtube videos (isnt most work done by the users browser anyway? like just putting an html/css tag and string or something?). And the layout is simply worse in general, it breaks some of the traditional layout that you see on every chan like date format, filename position, filename itself for single image posts(whats with the added 0?, I see the u), unneeded buttons like spoiler and remove (that can be fixed with css right?). And other problems that may be related to my setup only, for example I cant open images on separate tabs on my phone right now because they download instead. Currently quote preview and replies next to post number arent working for me both on phone and desktop browser. Nevermind, I checked the bigger boards and they have quotes working correctly, probably just another bug related to smaller boards (wasnt that what the whole migration was for?)

Not saying its terrible, but this just feels like change for the sake of change. Not everything is bad though, im liking the full text preview on the catalog and it feels lighter in general making a noticeable difference on my phones browser. Also the download button is a welcome addition. Im confident in admin kun or anyone else with skills to be able to fix some of the problems with it.

The piece of shit we're using right now is fine from a usability standpoint, its on par with the best chans out there. Its the shit loading times and non existent index updating whats shit, rework on the database engine and shit for proper updating and loading speed is all what was needed in my opinion.

Just wanted to add another example of change for no reason, a clear case of the it is the change in text formatting, again something shared among most chans and a change that serves no real purpose to the user, it likely does to the process of text parsing. I can't *whip out my dick* thanks to it.

>Not him but for a start I dislike that next cant embed youtube videos

This was an intentional change. The way embeds are done currently we need to fetch thumbnails from youtube's servers, which can be used to track users. In the interest of privacy, it's planned to be changed to the way halfchan does youtube embedding, which is generally superior anyway.

>date format

The date format can be changed from the options. Not sure why Josh decided to make the default what it is, but at least it's easy to fix.

>filename itself for single image posts

Josh probably just hasn't taken the time to change this. I don't think it's a big deal either way.

>unneeded buttons like spoiler and remove (that can be fixed with css right?)

Yes.

I don't know why those options aren't under the pop-out menu.

>probably just another bug related to smaller boards

The issue is with the import. Quote preview doesn't work with the posts that were imported. It should work fine on new posts.

>Not saying its terrible, but this just feels like change for the sake of change.

A lot of Next gave me that impression, but not all of it.>>25672

>rework on the database engine and shit for proper updating and loading speed is all what was needed in my opinion.

I might be misinterpreting your post, so forgive me if I am

Reworking the database is not easy with 8chan's current software. It would probably take more work to do so than it would to write Next.

Adding new features to the current software is also almost impossible. It's true that if no additional features were added it wouldn't be that bad for 8chan, but there are still a lot of things that would be nice to have, like better tools for Board Owners.

>>25673

> a clear case of the it is the change in text formatting

The text formatting was changed to Markdown's defaults (with a few exceptions). I don't think Josh did this because he thought it would be better, but because he thought it would be easier. That way we have text formatting that works out of the box. There will, hopefully, be some changes to it later, as it does have issues.

This wasn't done as "change for the sake of change" but rather because it was the default of the software he used, and it can be fixed fairly easily.

>I can't *whip out my dick*

There should be a character that escapes formatting, like "\", so you can do that. I don't know if there is something like that on Next, but that's normally how it's done.

So you'd have to type \*unzips dick\* instead.

My main complaint is that it's ugly, but if there's custom CSS that can fix the look then I'll manage. I hope they fix all the other shit as well but like I've said before it won't be too much of a problem for me since I remember this place having barebone features when I first came here.

>I was informed that 8chan has 8 servers with 8 cores and 8 gigs of ram each. However, I was not told that theses "cores" were logical cores (Think HyperThreading) not physical cores. This means it is far less powerful as I thought it was.

>In short, Next has to be at least twice as fast as I originally thought. This is a bit more complicated than just saying "20 requests per second".

>I'm going to accomplish this writing my own caching facades for Next. Specifically, I need to be able to serve at least 50% of responses without ever having to talk to PHP. This begins to shape Next into a lot like how 2ch operates so that we can use their hardware in the same way

Seems like we'll be using Infinity for a few weeks more at least.

I think the varnish thing caused regular users to be able to access the dev tools for a while so they could see activity with IP numbers unintended while active live boards in regular usage were being redirected to the beta.

We should stay off the beta and Infinity Next as long as we can because it may expose us to unnecessary vulnerabilites like that or cause loss of data.
