They're not noisy. They sometimes respond when I call to them or when they're distraught and hear any human voice, or are separated from significant members of their flock. That's about it for the noise they make.
Billy goats though (male goats, often for breeding)… Holy smokes. They're very stinky (they like to pee on their own face or stick their face in the urine of females), quite strong, and depending on the billy can be very, VERY determined.
Can smell them ~100m away if the wind is blowing in your direction. We had a billy we raised ourselves, and like most male animals they take to friendliness easier. He grew very attached to the females, and to us, but he was very… virile when the females were in heat. Harassed them non-stop so we had to separate him. He got out of most enclosures we put him in.
>put him in a closed off shed, put up boards in this little pen that reach up to ~6'- 6'6" high, with maybe a 2 foot gap from the ceiling
>"haha that'll do it"
>walk away satisfied as I hear this goat screaming, so sure that he's sealed away like some ancient demon
>20 minutes later he's out and navigated his way back to the main pen with the females
>try to wrap my mind as to how that such a feat is possible
Was the healthiest billy I've ever seen, but keeping an animal like that around isn't an option. They're not all like that, of course. Our most recent billy was really laid back and didn't smell too bad but he was kind of runty.
One of the goats (the one I handpicked from our last litter who I've spoiled) just had her kids a few hours ago.
>normally have to separate newbie nannies so they have a stable, safe place to figure it out
>normally takes them a while to get figure out what to do
>walk into barn
>kid is already out and standing on its feet, completely cleaned by the mum
>energetic and healthy, vigorously searching for milk
>has extra big, floppy ears because it's half nubian
she done me proud.
More goats on the way.
I love these little shits. Can't wait for more of them to be bounding about, climbing on rocks and such.
