 No.26917

Hey /kind/ wanna set up a minecraft sever or something like that? Let's play vidya together~

 No.26919

It's been a long time since I've played but I'd join in from time to time. Something like Minecraft would make this community feel a bit more real and aint nobody here that would grief so the harmony would be pretty sweet.

 No.26933

I'm bored of Minecraft but willing to participate. I'd be particularly interested if we could get a custom map or pre-Adventure Update generation instead of the boring vanilla terrain.

>>26919

>nobody would grief

You never know. Which is why

we should make it a whitelisted server.

 No.26938

>>26933

I'd like to help out and participate but I don't know enough about these kinds of things

 No.26967

My toaster cant run it. Why not a more standard game like CS or TF2 (cant run it either, just sugesting)?

 No.26983

Let's not pick something old & played out like TF2. Could we choose something a little less familiar? If anyone likes Driveclub, I'll set us up a team.

 No.27168

>>27167

I, too, like chess. I've very bad at the game though. I never properly learned the game so all I do is move my pieces in a very spastic manner. I don't win much, but I like to think that chess is more of a talking game.

You know, the kind where the two players opt to talk about their lives while playing the game

I could I guess if people would actually use it, but;

-I'm not sure how much that would cost

-I'm not confident I myself could competently run it

 No.27340

>>27305

It's easy.

Basic principles:

1- Try to develop all your pieces.

2- Try to have control over the center.

3- Keep as many pieces attacking or occupying the squares E4, E5, D4, D5 as you can.

4- Always, always, keep the king protected.

Castle as soon as possible.

5- Your rook's favorite files are B and G.

B2, G2, B7, and G7 are a bishop's favorite squares.

Begginer's most common mistakes:

1- Ignoring everything I said so far

2- Sending your Queen on suicide missions

3- Forgetting pawns are extremely important for the long run

4- Ignoring the immediate consequences of their moves, not analyzing what changes in the board if you move this piece to that square

5- Not taking your time to analyze all possibilities

6- Not looking arround the board whenever a move is made. Seriously, a single pawn moving may simply lay open the board's longest diagonal in such a way you'll lose your rook because you were looking to the upper part of the board rather than taking in the full picture.

Easy and effective openings you should look for:

1- Scandinavian Defense

2- French Defense

3- English Opening

4- Scotch Game

5- the 4 knights game

6- Spanish opening

I think that's it.

Also please learn how to en passant.

I learned the importance of this rule the worst way possible. I lost a chess championship when I was 12 or so because I didn't know what an en passant was.

Don't fall for the Sicilian. It's a meme.

 No.27341

>>27340

Oh yes, I forgot.

If you plan on practicing online to then play on a live board, you should expect disappointment.

I have found that playing on an online board is much easier simply because you have a better view of the board.

On real life boards I try and stretch my neck a bit and see the things from an upside view.

 No.27344

>>27340

>5- Not taking your time to analyze all possibilities

That's hard anon. I'd take really long or sometimes my brain feels like its over loaded. Sometimes there are too many possibilities to consider. I still enjoy the game though .

Where do you play? Do people still play chess on yahoo games?

Also thanks for your advice/wisdom

OP here

again I'm willing to pay $10 or whatever it is for the server, but only if:

-someone will help me run and admin the server

-someone will mod the server

-people will actually use it

I'd give it my best shot, but I have no idea what I'm doing and how interested interested and how many people are interested.

>That's hard anon. I'd take really long or sometimes my brain feels like its over loaded

Maybe you haven't been practicing enough.

Try your best to focus.

I'm not telling you to consider all the possibilities of the next 5 turns.

At this point, always thinking 1 turns ahead of the imediate response of your adversary is already great.

So at least keep in mind the basics of theory and pay attention to not lose any piece over silly mistakes.

I play on chess.com and lichess.org, both are excellent. I prefer chess.com though, they'll pair you with people of your level and there are many more features. I play on lichess when trying a different opening so if I lose I won't lose ladder points.

I also go to a square some 20 minutes away from where I live, once in a month or so, where I get to play with all sorts of people, from retired seniors to 18 year old punks.

You're welcome.

 No.27371

Yeah. There's 3 believe it or not. FOnline Reloaded is the easiest to set up, since just download an exe and play.

 No.27373

I'd be interested in a /kind/craft server if I have time, but I'm technically illiterate and can't into mods, so I won't post a baby elephant. I would post a baby elephant seal instead, but hotwheels won't stop eating my posts, so all you have is my word.

 No.27374

What worries me about Minecraft, however, is that my account is tied to my personal e-mail and I don't want any evidence whatsoever of me visiting this site. Otherwise it's a great choice.

Also, I'm highly suspicious of any free MMO. They have a tendency to draw unpleasant people.

I would play on it but I don't think I've ever saved a pic of a baby elephant now that you mention it.

There are already a lot of servers online, maybe we could find a friendly one and just try it out before you buy anything.

Its as easy to play a premade modpack now as it is to run regular minecraft, but I understand some computers can't handle modpacks so I'd be fine with starting out in vanilla to try things out.

No, I think that's 3.5 to 4 people, counting you. It's hard to count people on an anonymous imageboard… and there might be others who just don't want to post. It would be more convenient to set up a poll. So that's what I did!

 No.27382

Small Minecraft communities are sweet. I'd prefer vanilla with a custom map or modded in Beta world generation. Not sure about gameplay-altering mods, though, I'm fine with vanilla.

>>27375

There's nothing objectionable with this board, but I'd rather not have anyone knowing I visit this site.

>>27376

I don't know how this works. Wouldn't there still be evidence of the e-mail transition?

Its the kindest I could find :3

I don't think it can get much kinder than this, unless we make it ourselves. The members said welcome and the spawn is bully free. We could pick a place closer to spawn since I realized the location mentioned earlier is at the edge of the map.

 No.27406

>>27403

I saw someone called Deniee on the map earlier and then they asked if someone would like to join a town but offlined before I could reply. I thought it might be fun to join a friendly town and since they were on at the same time as I was on it seems like a good idea. Its fun to work up money (its a plugin) but it costs like 5k to start a town so might as well join one first before considering making one. The town is called Stratford (no pvp) at 1300,65,-4000.

I could play on it and provide technical support but I can't use any real money online (only make believe roleplay server ingame money). Server software like Bukkit can run plugins that are kinda like mods without the user having to download any mods. I just thought that since setting up a server can be a hazzle we could play on an already made server, but if OP really wishes to spend money on one for the goodness of others I would also rather use that :3

is someone willing to help me do that? also can someone put up a strawpoll thing for mods and include vanilla as an option please?

 No.27610

>>27603

To keep the server safe, use a whitelist and maybe a plugin for "undoing" changes (I know something like this exists) just to be sure. But griefing is unlikely to occur with a small, tight-knit playerbase.

Besides that plugin and some alternative form of world generation, I'd prefer a vanilla game with as little changes as possible.

 No.27612

I'd legitimately remember my login shit for MC and play with you guys.

 No.27616

>>27603

There's a list of plugins here ;

http://mods.curse.com/bukkit-plugins/minecraft/category/anti-griefing-tools

Using a whitelist means each user must give OP their minecraft name before joining the server. Do we really need that?

Hamachi is also an option but then everyone playing would have to download and configure hamachi. Playing games with others is scary

 No.27990

Sucessfully logged in the server for two times already, but my connection is just too weak and I couldn't even chop down a tree. I'll try again, but I doubt I'll be able to play.

>>27969

It can be comforting and/or funny if they're friendly.

 No.27991

>>27990

I was getting extreme lag when I got on a couple minutes ago. For example, I'd click a furnace and it wouldn't open for a whole minute or so as I walked around. I don't know anything about Minecraft servers, but I think it's on the server's end? Not sure.

 No.27995

>>27991

hi yeah I committed 12g of ram to it and got plugins to cut down on the lag but that laptop I'm using for it is pretty beat up so I can't make a lot of guarantees

I did notice tho the last time I was playing it got more stable after I was on it for a long time so while it's not the best server it can/does work a bit

I'll see what more I can do tho to make it run more stable and responsive

Playing with friendly people is scariest, because then I feel extra obligated to be a good person to play with

I'm sure you are a good person anon, and I love you

What are your timezones?

I seem to be by myself on the server most of the time (GMT)

 No.28154

>>28143

GMT -3

It might be better if we time coordinated this a bit like meeting at say 3 or 4 pm (GMT) and doing something specific like exploring and building up inside a cave like the mineshaft pointed to in the pic

Also it would be better if OP did more to fix the lag.

 No.28169

>>28166

>3 or 4 pm (GMT)

I won't be able to make it on most weekdays, since that's like 9 am here, but I can try to show up at that time one of these days, if other people agree that it's a good time.

 No.28186

>>27671

well you could also use openvpn for that and you wouldnt expose everyones IP to each other

 No.28187

Cant seem to connect to the server, any specific port I should use? Is it even up?

 No.28199

OP here the thing I'm involved with is stupid and I'm kinda locked out of that apartment for a week so the server will be down till next sunday. After that barring more normalfriend stupidity I will resume keeping it running as constantly as I can. I apologize for the inconvenience but there's nothing I can do about it cuz irl issues with human beings

 No.28202

also I'm trying to figure out a fix for the lag but 12gs is already way more ram than should be needed so that's not the problem. That laptop I'm using as the server admittedly does have a few problems but nothing that should be affecting this. I have an anti-lag plugin installed, and piling more on would probably add more lag if anything.

most likely it's because my internet provider is the kind of nonsensical conglomerate of bastards that can't even set up their own website properly, and go out of their ways to self-enforce laws regarding torrenting and such on their own customers even at the detriment of their own paid for service

I'll look into solutions during this week and try to come up with a few things I can try, but as I've stated a few times I've been playing this by ear from the start and therefor can't actually promise anything, and in the first place it might not be something I can affect…

 No.28204

sage for incompetence and failure, but I'll have the server back up in a week hopefully working better than before.

 No.28205

And seriously if anyone wants to help me run and set this up you're more than welcome to. Because I will simply continue to struggle at it on my own if I have to. I wanna do this and play games with you all and do things for kind., but due to the fact I haven't any proper idea what I'm doing this probably can only get more frustrating and difficult to watch the longer it goes on.

 No.28640

OP here server is back up and staying that way I'll see what I can do about the lag

 No.28663

does anyone have any clear suggestions about fixing the lag it definetly has enough ram dedication an I ve been lookin into it but I can't figure out if its anything I can affect? is there any way to tell whether the problem is my computer, my internet service, or my set up for the server?

 No.28667

what other games do you all wanna play anyways? there's a kind steam group or we could have a /kind/ pokemon tornament or soemthin Idk lets just play some games

 No.28674

>>28667

I wish I had any suggestions, but all I really play is singleplayer stuff, jRPGs and Ace Attorney/Professor Layton.

Maybe if the folk here like Minecraft, then they'd enjoy Terraria?

Apart from that, I don't know many online multiplayer games.

phew, that's good I was worried. I hope you have fun there friend. Are you having any trouble with lag or anything?

 No.28686

>>28685

different anon, but it's been decent in terms of lag. Got pretty bad about an hour ago, and at some points it was pretty much unplayable, but now it's really solid and has been for a while.

Thanks for hosting it, by the way. Haven't been here long, but it's pretty fun so far.

 No.28688

>>28686

my computer and the sever seem to be running stable near as I can tell so it might be an issue with my internet service I'm not sure I can fix that, might be one of my roommates watching net flicks or something tho I'll try to see what's going on when it gets bad and see about the service itself

 No.28689

>>28686

I'm glad you're having fun tho~

hopefully I can find time to get on for a bit so we can play it together

OP here while I have time and the server is running fine I wanted to address other games again…

I'm going to just keep the minecraft server running so that's fine, and I hope you guys use and enjoy it, but it wouldn't be bad to play more games with /kind/ anons (not that I really have the time).

but I'd need to know what you guys have I haven't any consoles atm but I have a 3ds, and a decent gaming computer with steam.

someone brought up the fallout MMO, which I didn't know was a thing but, are there any decent MMOs out there? preferably ones some of you already play because if the gameplay isn't bad what usually puts me off those is the other players so I might actually enjoy them with you guys.

since kind seems to have a lot of aminu weebs like myself maybe phantasy star online 2 (weird but cool, but you have to play on the jap servers) would be fun I enjoy the game itself but I haven't anyone to play it with really. I could show you guys how to set the game up and play if people want. It's totally free play and not pay to win

As far as jrpgs tho that's also my personal preference, but they've been a bit less single player of late. With monster hunter (awesome series) and final fanasy explorers (monhun lite boring unless you're super into the FF series) and fire emblem fates (not as good as the last one but lots of qt characters) had a lot of online bits in it so feel free to throw in ideas and games you like even if they're not usually multiplayer.

overall tho I'm just looking for other things we can try

 No.28745

File: 1458663890914.jpg (6.51 KB, 233x216, 233:216, url.jpg)

I'm an intern librarian/teacher/photographer/web designer/robotics expert at a charter school atm and considering that and my disposition I kinda just switch between being super busy and too tired/lazy to do anything. So I can't speak to how often I myself can actually play games with you guys.

But like with the minecraft server I'm happy to help get things set up so you all can play games together and then when I have a chance to I have a nice place to go to play games and maybe with nice people too.

So if anyone has any ideas I'm happy to do leg/ground work to get things set up. Tho I dropped them pretty quickly I've tried out and gotten good at a bunch of MMOs (i.e. PSO2, firefall, spiral knights, Rift, that weird star trek one, etc.) since I liek games and get lonely easily so I can help you guys set up accounts and learn how to play and create a guild or whatever since it'll always be pretty similar to something I've tried even if I haven't seen that game specifically.

as far as single player games as long as it's something we all agree on we could just do something where we all play the same game for like a week or a month and have this thread be a discussion board about that game.

idk I'm open to ideas and putting a bit of work into them if need be I just kinda wanna hang out and play games with /kind/ anons

 No.28746

I mean in a way this board is already sort of a friendly /b/ so how come it can't also be a friendly /v/?
