I wouldn't be surprised, however, Bir Tawil (or is it The Kingdom of North Sudan?) and Liberland serve as an extremely interesting case study: it is not only possible but the support you'd have at your back will be there when you need it, all you have to do is open the door and walk through.

Bir Tawil aka North Sudan, is an 800 sq mile chunk of useless desert. Both Sudan and Egypt want the coast along Elba National Park so with each of them rejecting the other's basis for their border, Bir Tawil is claimed by neither.

The problem with Liberland is that while neither side technically claims the 2sq mile area they're wanting to make a micro nation, Serbia is still legally required to monitor and control it. Which is why the Serbian police kicked out the entire group for illegally crossing the border from Croatia into Serbia. They've since set up a base on the Serbian side of the river.

Also worth noting, The Kingdom of North Sudan, has recognized the nation of Liberland. Quite literally, the only place to do so thus far, as all the other actual countries have laughed Liberland off as a joke.

Still interesting though.
