Fuck off with your k-shit. Lets talk about actual culture.
>Define culture
What I mean is korean food, history language and society. Any discussion that isn't k-pop, k-drama or any celebrity shit is welcome.

>not being able to see real glimpses of culture from certain aspects of k-shit…especially some of the netizen shit

That said some of the food is great. Yet some so very unappealing, but then again the same can be said for any culture's.

How difficult is it to learn to speak Korean? How about reading?

I remember a good few years ago I tried learning Japanese and I got fairly good at it but I lost all motivation to do it after a while.

Anyone ever watched Korean Englishman?

It's exactly what it says on the tin, some English dude who loves Korea and makes videos about cool stuff to do in Korea and cool stuff to do in England.

I think it's pretty good.

Wait, I'm confused. Is he an American that went to London and then Korea? I only ask because in a video where he speaks English he has an American accent, not British.

I'm starting a Korean course in a couple of weeks, but I've heard is the least difficult Asian language, maybe because it's fairly recent, only 500 years of history, and because it was constructed with the purpose of being simple to learn.

Usually people say "it's easy" but no language is easy, you need to work on it to master it, or to at least understand it.

Well you should bring a subject first, the only thing bad with this board is that there aren't many anons.

That being said, I wanted to know how much propaganda is that Arirang TV ad saying "the Korean culture has 5000 years of history", because it sounds like utter bullshit.

Everything I ever see on tv or talked about is basically 1300s (Joseon Dynasty) onwards in terms of Korean history.

remember you're talking about the same people who say Kim Jong-Il's birth happened on Mt. Kumgang and was foretold by birds.

No, he's British, I can definitely tell that in his accent. His accent does sound slightly different to British but I'd put that down to him speaking Korean.

Nigger, learn history. 'Korean history' starts at gojoseon towards current korea.

Oh, God. I have learned to love nearly every kind of Korean food. When I first arrived in Korea three years ago I was a desert-born American who could absolutely not do any kind of seafood whatsoever. But after a few years with a Korean girlfriend, I have come to embrace all things Korean Cuisine…

Except for 번대기 (beondegi). Every time I try it it just tastes like mud and unhappiness. No amount of Soju or 정하 can make me forget what I am eating.

Reading is easy. It takes about two weeks to get relatively proficient at it. That being said you will have nearly no understanding and you will be pronouncing a lot of words wrong.

Now when it comes to Speaking/understanding - that is when shit gets intense.

Korean is an Altaic language (along with Japanese) that has a completely different grammar structure than English (SOV as opposed to SVO) and an incredibly complex system of verb conjugation. Because of this the DOD named Korean as one of the hardest languages in the world.

But by all means, don't let that stop you. It is a fantastic language, a wonderful culture, and an incredible amount of fun. Dive in, try your best, and be ready to make a whole lot of mistakes - but I can tell you from experience, it is worth it.

no. because that's way too much work.

I will translate images if you upload them and if they arent fucking walls of text.

A recent Korean meme is the Jukchang meme. Jukchang is a bamboo spear, and the line goes like this. "Everyone is equal in front of the jukchang, one hit and you go, one hit and i go."

You can use it for unfair social phenomena. Because after all, a senator and homeless are both equal in front of the jukchang- in death we are all equal.

Korea is an interesting place.

It is a vibrant democracy – lots of protests, a population extremely interested in politics (not at all like the states)–but also extremely hierarchical and stuffy.

memes such as jukchang represent the anger and pressure felt by the internet using population within this dichotomy.

That's all bs. Only the current writing system is relatively new(invented by King Sejong). The language itself is much older.

Korean is easy to learn to read, but hard to master because of it's complex grammar and verb conjugation.

If you have already studied Chinese characters like I did, you will find that Korean is littered with them except they write out the words phonetically (as opposed to using Hanja) unlike in Japanese where they use Kanji and many times the word has many different meanings when you look it up on the dictionary depending on the character but you have no idea which character is being used in the context of the sentence. This drove me completely fucking insane while I was self-studying Korean.

>>1767

Pretty sure they had a stoneage and a short bronzeage(mumun?) before quickly moving to into the iron age. I don't really see how it is part of their culture though which I believe is mostly influenced by Joseon dynasty's culture.

>>3222

Ironic considering Korea has historically despised all foreigners except for the Chinese. If you learn some east asian history you would know why. They fought a countless number of wars against northern tribes that came into power.

I think the final nail in the coffin was when they had to fight against a Manchu invasion right after a Japanese one that they were still recovering from. As well as their beloved Ming Dynasty getting taken over by "barbarians".

Hermit kingdom folks.

>The language itself is much older.

You gotta source on that? I only know that Korean is relatively new, I mean I'm sure it wasn't created in a few years out of nothing, but I don't think there was a Korean language before Sejong.
