Better statistics would be great, especially if there are going to be achievements like the kill everyone or kill only hostiles ones. In particular it seems that when you spawn new npcs by running in front of doors they get added to the population and aren't in the population stat you see at the beginning of the level so you could probably end every with 0 population but still not have killed everything because you didn't spawn everyone.

Running should be on by default, no need to hold down a button for 90% of the game.

Level select is pretty necessary.

You know how when you go behind a solid object the game takes away the visual of it so you can see your character? I think the area for that should increase, it's pretty small in the game.

a snow level where you wander around on the outskirts of this small town and find your way into underground tunnels

little things, like the tunnels matching their exits in terms of size, so you could superimpose them and have it match up

in half-life 1, there were a lot of submaps, that, if you superimposed them, would intersect in impossible ways, and avoiding that is one of the subtle little things that make a game good

they could've had it so the places where the maps intersect have you able to go back into a part of an older map, but now it's blown up or full of monsters or something

Update the options menu to contain multiple sub-menus covering a multitude of adjustable options. Here are suggestions laid out for what these sub-menus would possibly contain:

General: subtitles, toggle/hold certain actions, etc.
Graphics: brightness slider, resolution adjustment, window mode, framerate adjustment, AA filtering, gore…actually fuck censoring gore - it's expected!
Audio: music volume slider, sound effects volume slider, dialogue volume slider, etc.
Keyboard/Mouse: specific key rebindings, etc.

I'd like to see some more weapons, a larger map, maybe a larger variety of things to do and equally ridiculous missions.
If nothing else, could you possibly get Rick Hunter to say more Postal Dude lines if he's still alive and doing voiceovers?

And how about more executions, I liked being able to shoot a guy crawling away on the floor but it got a little old after a while, should maybe include some stomps/kicks/dropping a grenade/Molotov/anything new if you can.

Maybe some more enemy types if you can fit them in, going behind a house/building should just make the whole thing transparent.

I know my dream of a qt3.14 anime version of Postal where you have to fight Monster Girls will never happen, so how about a 'Last Man Standing' mode, where you have to survive endless waves of civilians and policemen until you inevitably die, and the goal is to see how long you last plus how many you can kill. Bonus if the arena you spawn in is randomly generated each time. In fact, just some more 'gamey' modes that mix up the gameplay would be really cool.

Here's what I'd like to see based on my rather… short amount of time having played postal classic.

It isn't. It's hasn't got any pop-culture satire. It's much darker and ends with you attempting to shoot up a elementary school. It's about a guy going insane and having demons in his head tell him to kill people.

There's not much more to say on that point, but for some of the others;

- Seconding a co-op mode if there's multiplayer.

- Tying in with interface screws, how about hallucinations? Think power-ups with side effects or have it as a low-health penalty, whichever. Can be enemies, items, etc.

- Some more consistency inside the game itself could be nice. I like how the first Postal was structured level-wise, but emphasizing the way the world is laid out wouldn't hurt, letting you sort of plot the Postal Dude's rampage as he proceeds. Diary entries did that already, but it could be fleshed out a bit more.

- This is pushing it for a straight remake, but possible forks in the level progression? Single or multiple endings are another thing which could be neat, but simply letting the player pick a route through the game would up replay value -somewhat-.

I know people are saying that POSTAL was super serious, I have played it, I own it physically and on Steam, but I don't fully agree. Yes, the game was dark, but there were the occasional things to break it up. Things like people shouting "Has anyone seen my ear?" always made me chuckle. Please, include plenty of dialogue variety, since I just remember hearing "Ow, my leg" over and over again, but don't make it all super serious, the game will seem way too edgy if not. I get it, dark tone and all but yeah, that's my two cents anyway.

Also bonus stage where you raid the Akella offices, maybe even in Catharsis. The main game can be as dark as you want, but there's nothing to say some bonus levels couldn't be a bit wild and humorous.

Well, Redux is still very early in its pre-production right now. Consider the fact that the main dev team is currently focused and working hard around the clock, to push Paradise Lost out the door. That's the main focus right now. The design documents for Redux haven't even been completed, yet. The team had an artist do a redraw of P1's first stage and they knew that a remake of P1 would be their next project; so they announced it a little ahead of time as a little present on Postal's 17th anniversary. The development of Redux will kick in next year, after Paradise Lost is out.

Here's what I can tell ya right now, as far as tech/features goes:

Please consider immersion and atmosphere. Being able to remove the HUD, prompts, hints, tutorials, etc. Braid did this really well. There is nothing more annoying than replaying a game on the nightmare difficulty and still having the game tell you how to perform basic shit with no way to turn it off.

Basically just play your own game and add in hings you think make it more immersive and engaging. More options are always better than less. You mentioned the Serious Sam remakes, and they have options out the ass.

Like, you - the player. What's your role in the game? Are you the Postal Dude?

Or are you are the demon in his head?

Postal Dude is insane. Psychotic. A murderer. But not on his own. Hell, left on his own he is completely harmless. He just stands there. That is, until you push a button on the keyboard; until you take over. You aren't Postal Dude - you control him! You drive him to commit the horrible violent acts that he does, for your own entertainment. For your amusement. Hell, you can even have him kill himself, with the push of a button, if you so choose.

And then you reach that ending, faced with a level full of kids - symbols of complete purity and innocence - and you naturally have Postal dude trying to shoot them up and kill them all to no avail. And then he just collapses to the ground, and you have lost control of him. He snapped out of it.

The mechanics of the game are very much connected to this. Your question presumes that the game needs to make sense and have internal consistency, which it seems to lack in this one instance. But what if this is a game that knows it's a game, and keeps that element under wraps until the very end? I mean, it's been there tangentially in that your control of him as a video game character is reflected in the game as a psychosis (a "demon") controlling him. But what if in that ending, the 4th wall just crumbles entirely and the game directly intervenes? Sort of a divine intervention in the context of the game's narrative, but in the context of you as a player, playing a video game - it's the game coming in and telling you "No, you sick fuck. I'm not gonna let you kill children!". It deems child-murder to be crossing the line, forbids you from doing it, and as punishment it just ejects you from being in control of the game. Of course, in the context of the narrative, you could also attribute it to the Dude's psychosis, and say that he was just so fucked out of his mind that he was hallucinating children, saw himself trying to murder them and the realization of how insanely wrong that is just made him kind of snap out of it, and denounce your control over him. There's a lot of you ways you could write it off in terms of the game's story, but what if in terms of it being a video game, this is the video game itself coming in and intervening with the severity of your actions?

And of course, without your control, the Dude just collapses and reverts to his motionless, harmless state - put in a mental asylum to pay for the crimes that you had him commit.

Or maybe they just put it in there as a fake-out for goofs. Like "hah! psych! the kids are invincible!" just for laughs. Fuck if I know.

This is actually quite genius, but it would be even better if there was some secret or tedious way to finish the game without killing anyone.

I mean, it would be a huge middle finger to people saying the game is too violent or offensive. The fact that you could point out to these people "you are only killing people because you want, you sick fuck" would be beautiful on its own. You could make them see the game is only violent because they are violent, because they are not forced to kill. Yet they did it because it's the first thing they thought of, because it was "logical", "intuitive" or even "fun".

It would be like Spec Ops: The Line done well. People complained about that game's message because there was really no other way to advance in the game, and the only way to do a "pacifist" run was to shut down the console.

A franchise that pulled this correctly was Metal Gear Solid. You can complete the game only killing the bosses, and in MGS4 you can even just reduce their stamina to zero to win. There is an achievement for doing so, and there is also another achievement for killing too many people (which plays a Liquid Snake audio clip saying "you enjoy all the killing, that's why!", and after some seconds Snake pukes and his psyche drops). The main difference is MGS is a stealth game and doesn't require you beating a certain number of enemies before reaching the next stage, but it does allow you to knock out people with melee attacks or the dart gun.

Knocking up enemies could also apply to Postal. What if you add non-lethal melee attacks? You could punch hostile enemies until they drop unconscious to the ground, maybe even instagibbing them if you grab them by the back without the target noticing. Then, you could execute the enemy if you want in the most gruesome ways by pressing the attack button again once they are in the ground, but it wouldn't be necessary to progress. Non-lethal weaponry could be unlocked at latter levels, like rubber ball rifles, anesthetic rifles, stun grenades, tasers…

Not only it would be a nice twist ("No, John. You are the demons!"), it would also add extra challenge to beat the game this way. I loved doing a no-kills no-alerts run at MGS4 simply because it's a completely different way of playing the game.

Personally, I want the gameplay to be true to the original, but obviously improved and brought to today's standards.

Also, make the levels bigger and much more interactive and alive, the originals were very static and dull (though that can be forgiven considering the time the game came out)

Some comedy is fine, but not to where it's South Park. If anyone's ever played Harvester from 1996, I think that's a good place to draw inspiration from in terms of the game's tone/atmosphere. Dark as all hell, but with a comedic quirkiness to it all.

One last thing; the story. I'm under the very firm belief that a game doesn't need some academy award winning plot to it all, to quote John Carmack "Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important". That said, I feel that the remake would miss it's mark without some sort of plot. Nothing convoluted or intrusive, but just some kind of lore that the player can discover as the game goes on, showing the Postal Dude's view of the world as well as the world the game takes place in.

A "theme", if you will, that the original was trying to convey (though not very well) was whether or not the Dude was fighting against something evil or if he was just psychotic. I feel that if that sort of dynamic would make the remake much more effective at messing with the player's head as well as make it more memorable. Nothing says schizophrenic mind fuck then some Stephen King/Lovecraft-ness.
