Because they don't want their precious baby to be tarnished by a sequel despite the fact that there are flaws that most acknowledge. Plus it's not like they could force a C&D even if they issued one.

Another issue though is a sequel is weird in that you're basically asking for a confirmed route or implied route, otherwise you might as well just make new characters.

New characters would probably be for the best, with only a few returning characters. The game could be set years after the first.

The obvious returning characters would be Mutou, the Nurse, Nomiya, if he's relevant, maybe even Hisao or Misha as teachers or something.

As for which route would be canon, I don't really think it matters that much. But if there had to be an established canon, I think it should be Kenji's path.

I failed to mention the length of these books. Both weigh in at over 300 paperback pages apiece. By word count, the first book is 99,000 words and the second is 122,000. The first covers about 30 days of calendar time, the second just a few days more. No chapter exceeds six pages, so those of you with short attention spans should be able to keep up.
