If the ayyliens are from a planet similar to ours, they'd look either like something from the sea, or one of our land animals. Survival of the fittest only allows so many shapes and sizes.
If they are from a far more exotic location, then we can't possibly know. We also have to account for the fact that those aliens can probably manipulate their own biology through technology, assuming they find us first.
