Finally got enough courage to try and speak Spanish at a local restaurant in town. They were helpful and kind and told me each time I come back to only speak Spanish with them. Awesome.

>>416Congrats. I've done this many times, but only if I hear the cashier or whatever speaking Spanish prior to me ordering. I don't want to kmmake assumptions that might offend somebody.
Nonetheless, that's an awesome way to start applying what you've learned in real life.

>>418Not him, but in my experience you just start slow to make sure. When they bring the chips or glasses of water, just say "gracias." If they reply in Spanish or seem happy, you're probably good to go.

lengua vs lenguaje vs idioma
some info i got from a duolingo comment:
—
"(La) lengua" means "tongue" and "language", and "(el) lenguaje" just means language, but in a different sense:
Lengua and idioma: These words are for when you're talking about foreign languages, like Spanish and French.
Lenguaje: This word is used in this sense: "The language of the businessmen" (el lenguage de los empresarios) "Spoken language" (lenguaje hablado), "Written language" (lenguaje escrito), or "foul language" (lenguaje obsceno).
