There's a 24 hour supermarket and Tim Hortons up the road from me, so I like to get a coffee at 3 or 4AM and then check out the discount sandwiches or bakery/deli stuff from the previous day in the supermarket. It's a comfy walk, especially going between the massive snow banks from this winter.

I really like the idea of sitting in a quiet 24 hour coffee shop really late.
Personally, I simply climb out of my window when everyone is asleep, and go for a relaxing walk. It's so quiet.

I go on walks at around 3-4 am. In a business/suburb area (hard to describe). The deer, the fucking deer. You're having that serene and surreal nighttime feeling, and then all the sudden 8 glowing alert eyes staring you down. Shit scares the crap out of you. 99/100 times they just run away but ever since I saw a news story of a deer with rabies coming up and attacking a woman, I am always very cautious…

I did this for awhile a year or two back, when I was technically NEET after just getting laid off of a night job. Would just grab a book to read and walk the abandoned streets of my suburban town, down to the riverwalk maybe or just the IHOP for a sandwich and endless coffee. There's no traffic and the summer nights were much cooler than the days, I can't imagine trying to do it at any other time.
>>1489Where I live the deer are most active at dawn and dusk, so going out in the middle of the night I hardly saw 'em. Skunks were more of a danger, but whistling, humming, or singing a tune as you go lets critters know you're coming and gives them time to skedaddle instead of being startled into the "fight mode" instinct. Also saw a lot of ghosts, the kind that you see walking in the middle of the street, look away to change the song in your MP3 player and when you look back up they're gone. No way they could have turned, not enough time to open a door and get inside, nothing.

I went walking for a couple of hours a week ago.
At first I was just going to my neighborhood's small park to walk around the track a bit but it was closed.
So I went walking a bit further to another park that was outside my neighborhood. It was more secluded being hidden behind a large apartment and houses. I sat in the swingset with no one around, yet the park was fairly lit.
After a while, i started moving around a couple blocks, went into minimart for some skittles. It was very late and akward, it reminded my the of trayvon case in the US.
But you tend to notice small details different when you're walking at your own pace. Some bulb flickering, an alley I never knew about, generally empty and dark parking lots. The only people I saw were passing by in cars and near open stores.
I think i hate the area I live in since all of it is road and a lot of space is closed off.

Been a 3rd shifter forever.
I don't go for night walks often. Town isn't really enjoyable at night as there is nothing to do.
I do more night fishing instead. Night fishing and just driving around looking for something to do. Besides gas stations and Walmart, there's nothing open all night. On good nights during the summer I'll get a six pack and drive to my favorite field. Then I'll set out my lawn chair and stare at the stars, with the sound of nothing all around me.
It's too cold in winter for night walks. I mean 20-30 below zero Fahrenheit.

Night fishing and sitting in a field like that sound like they would feel really good. I need to get out and do stuff like that. Just stare at the night sky, ponder life, perhaps.
It is far too cold where I am though, at least right now. Do you get mosquito bites when you sit in that field? That is what worries me often. I hate mosquitoes.
Most of the time I drop by 24 hour coffee shops and read a book for a few hours in the middle of the night. This is only possible when I am on holiday though. Must at least try to maintain a proper sleep schedule when I have work to do.

I didn't know that there were so many others like me. I volunteer as a teacher at an international school in Thailand currently, and while the rest of the people living in my apartment are sleeping, I'm nearly always up until at least 2 a.m., and sometimes later. For some reason, I almost never actually pull an all-nighter, though. I usually get about 2 hours of sleep, since I have to get up early to go to work. I usually just collapse on the couch, either playing retro video games (Gamecube/Megadrive), or trying to draw or reading or watching videos. I also often go outside late at night to buy food or groceries or do laundry, since I like to get that done when there are less people about. There's just something nice about being alone where you can collect your thoughts.
I'm kind of tired, but usually I don't get that tired in the morning--just in the afternoon. I must have really wrecked my body's clock or something. Most of this is caused by a HORRIBLE habit I have of only really ever doing anything when I absolutely HAVE to do it. I am a chronic and extreme procrastinator...

This is a feel I understand completley my friend. You might want to consider pulling an all nighter and trying to reset your body clock. When it is screwed the way it is, that isn't hard to do. Just play those awesome retro games through the night. In the morning go with coffee/enrgy drinks and a meal around when you want to wake up. Then simply operate as normal, and crash at a reasonable bedtime to reset your body clock properly. Oh yeah, also get lots of sunlight in the morning if possible. That helps too.
>There's just something nice about being alone where you can collect your thoughts
That's what makes us night owls. It is something that not everyone appreciates. Sadly it probably isn't very healthy at all, so best do in moderation.
Here is a tip, one owl to another: Decide to do things in tiny steps to get things done. For example;
Clean the dishes
Stand up
Pick up dishes
Take dishes to sink
I'm at the sink now so,
Rinse dishes
It works by tricking the part of your brain that says "no way in fuck am I doing that, too much work" by presenting tiny pieces of work so easy that part of the brains alarm doesn't get tripped.
Good luck man

Sadly I can go for nightly walks in the city very seldomly. Live in a small village and the town's about 40 minutes away by train. This also means that if I go to the city at night I'll have to stay the whole night, since the last train back goes at about midnight, which is way too early.

Sounds pretty lewd man. But I agree, snow does change lighting and sounds for the better. Unfortunately we don't get it much here, we're far enough south that we get rain, occasional sleet and frosts but usually only have proper snow (few centimetres thick) once or twice a year.
It's a shame, as while I generally dislike winter due to the short, cold grey days, I think if it got a bit colder so we actually had snow often I'd enjoy it a lot more. At least the summers are still pretty nice.

So, you guys might be proud of me. First of all, so you should know, I'm a vegetarian, and I don't drink alcohol or caffeine. In fact, I just went to a vegetarian club meeting yesterday!
I have been trying to take vitamin C lately, and I have been slowly recovering from illness. Basically all I have now is 'morning sickness' and a bit of a cough with phlegm in my throat.
I am almost done grading my final exams, but I feel there will be some 'late' nights ahead, ha ha--wish me luck. I'm used to drawing manga and playing video games instead of doing school-related stuff now, so this is tough.

I like the pic, even if I don't like whiskey.
Well, for once I'm posting here and it's not 'late'...
So, basically, what we do at the vegetarian club is get a chance to meet and greet other members, hear a presentation (usually actually having to do with vegetarianism--more on that later), and most importantly, eat some really good food. It's tough to get vegetarian/vegan food in Thailand, and usually it's Indian food or something. Not surprisingly, there are always a lot of Sikhs and Europeans in the audience, but there are also some Americans (like myself), Thais, and other Asians as well.
Unfortunately, something happened later in the club that really made me a bit upset. A British man who was not a vegetarian but was curious happened to stop by, and he ended up getting asked up front by the pair of presenters, one of which who was into 'Traditional Chinese Medicine', and the other who was into 'homeopathy'. The man had fallen on his shoulder and was currently trying to recover with physical therapy. He said he had been in a lot of pain recently.
So, without really telling him what was being done or what the treatment was supposed to do for him, this small Portuguese Angolan man performed a 'Traditional Chinese Therapy' on him (in other words, he stabbed him with a bunch of needles in random places far away from where his actual pain was).
Then, the poor guy was asked what he felt, and he clearly felt a lot of pressure to say that the treatment 'worked', although from talking to him later I can tell it only gave him more pain and caused him to bleed a bit.
I was pretty furious, especially because I had greatly respected this 'doctor' prior to the meeting (I had heard him speak before) and I had also seen some documentaries and done some research before on acupuncture which led me to believe it could be an effective treatment. However, to see something like that fail right in front of my eyes has damaged the reputation of all 'alternative' medical therapy in my eyes. This is coming from someone who took the MCAT (scored in the 80th percentile), but didn't want to try to go to medical school because I thought Western medicine is just about treating the symptoms and not the disease, and hospitals keeping people sick, and all that. Now, this poor guy will associate vegetarianism with quack medicine, even though he could clearly benefit from it, as he is overweight.
