>Federal authorities have charged a New York man with building a 200-pound (90-kilogram) bomb they say he planned to detonate on Election Day on the National Mall in Washington.

>Prosecutors said he planned to use the bomb to kill himself and draw attention to a political system called sortition, in which public officials are chosen randomly rather than elected.

Isn't sortition part of Paul Cockshotts version of democracy. With a feedback of referendums if the member of office is incompetent?

I'll tactically support that guy out of realpolitik.

>Isn't sortition part of Paul Cockshotts version of democracy.

It's the version of democracy literally meant when the word was invented, AKA actual fucking democracy. The Athenians considered elections to be oligarchy.

Athenian democracy was the only true form of democracy.

women couldn't participate.

Sortition is fucking insipid, go talk to a random person on the street and then tell me they should be a duly elected representative. Not to mention the possibility that 51% fascists/sympathisers get selected through pure chance. The only freedom is freedom from representatives.

Athenian democracy is something we must look to as proud westerners. Only landowners could vote.

>suicide bombing for electoral reform

lmaooo this fucking timeline

Tbh, makes a lot of sense.

how about..

imagine if the US has a third chamber that can submit legislation for the house to vote on whose members are picked by sortition. Anyone with at least 500 signatures from citizens of their state who submits a form can be picked. One per state, 100 at random from the whole population. they meet every semester, and their transports and time off from their jobs is paid for. Every semester they pick vote on a speaker, who acts as as a senator.

this does sound like some heavy lib idea, but it would be better than what the US has right now.

btw: assume their mandate lasts 2 years, letting them have 4 meetings per mandate

are you sure about that? I don't think that's true

>Sortition is fucking insipid, go talk to a random person on the street and then tell me they should be a duly elected representative

You could use this very same way of thinking to argue against elections.

Citizens, property owners or not, could vote, but citizens were a minority compared to the slave population.

In a sortition only certain people would be eligible for selection.

>drawings are people

wrong and offtopic, fuck off

Believe it or not but a cunning capitalist can even play that system.

Who, lol? Isn't that just the same as representative democracy?

Wouldn't be a proper check if all it could do is submit legislation. The third chamber needs to be able to review and vote on all legislation.
