How did democracy work in the Soviet Union after Stalin? As far as I know, Stalin purged oppositing factions from the party, but what happened after? Specially after the "de-Stalinization"? Did Soviet democracy return to its former glory?

Wasn't the Soviet parliament just a rubber stamp for decisions made in the politburo? It doesn't seem like there was much freedom in regards to selection of candidates.

 No.2870175

Even if the claim that "There was no democracy in the Soviet union" was true there is literally the same or less amount of democracy in capitalist countries (depending on which country we're talking about) In the USA the last 3 presidents were, in order-selected by the Supreme Court, selected by the banking industry, selected by the electoral college. Voting in the USA is disenfranchised and gerrymandered to such a degree that it pretty much guarantees most congressional elections will be a foregone conclusion and even if there is massive voter turnout to counter this it's been proven that voting machines can be rigged to change your vote and so on. Even if you live in a slightly more democratic country the ruling class still decides what is and isn't possible. Look at how Brexit is being handled and the immediate corruption of the 5 Star Movement in Italy. Look at Syriza in Greece or Duterte in the Philippines giving into us imperialism despite winning partially because of his isolationist promises.

And what of Soviet nations that transitioned to capitalism in the late 20th century? Where is all the democracy in Russia or the Ukraine?

Democracy under capitalism is just as mythological as it supposedly was in the USSR.

This. When it comes to soviet democracy, suddenly capitalists are armed with razor-sharp critiques of how it is lacking and rigged and a lot of power is entrenched and can't be dislodged through democratic means etc. but are completely unable to apply this same critique to capitalist democracy. Soviet democracy was lacking in the same way as capitalist democracy and I wish we'd stop falling for this idiotic idea that liberal democracy is more democratic.

1) the USA

2) Poland

3) Ukraine

4) Japan

2) Sweden

Number 1 arms exporter per capita. The most violent, imperialist nation, but they don't send their own people overseas to do the dirty work, so normies think they are peaceful.

3) Switzerland

Notorious money launderer, people support their violent, evil regime because it gives them good jobs.

4) Singapore

I used to think Singapore rigs their elections, but after meeting Singaporeans, I'm not so sure I would call it rigged. The People's Action Party plays dirty and controls the media, but they actually do have the support of the masses in Singapore.

5) Australia

Just look at the reputation Australians have on the internet as right wing shitposters. This hasn't come out of a vacuum, their society is increasingly heading right wing.

Jordan is so vague in his words that he can agree with everyone, even mass murderers, cause he literally does agree with them when saying that they must believe in nihilism and that nihilism always leads to suicide or homicide and that nihilism is at fault and that they acted perfectly rational.

Jordan is never concise and noone can ever nail him down even when he obviously does push some agenda.

After all he is the ultimate self help guru, so he mastered the art of saying alot but saying nothing at all at the same time.

I just started watching the Peterson opening is very hard to get through. When he says he read the communist manifesto to prepare for the debate and then compares it to student papers he gave poor marks its so cringey I had to pause the video. The dialectics of criticism.

When liberal comedians like John Oliver criticises some of the exceptionally horrid scams in capitalism, there isn't just people saying, oh we need to stop this, there are also people who are saying, oh that's how it works, that's how you make a quick buck.

And the same goes with the portrayal of Stalin and Mao where the focus is on purges rather then socialist planning that lead to drastic rise of live expectancy.

Zizek at least tries to make material analysis when he criticises 20th century communism, Peterson is basically just a (unwitting?) crypto-Stalinist that propagates a unbelievable brutal set of instructions, that probably has little historic validity.

 No.2869800[Reply]

I have come to realize that some of the analysis Marx makes can be applied a bit wider

The quote that

>"The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles."

is significantly less an accurate analysis of history than that of

>"Capital is dead labor, which, vampire-like, lives only by sucking living labor, and lives the more, the more labor it sucks."

However, this applies not just to capital, but to general machinery and technology. The creation of technology both implies the creation of further technologies in competition and efficiency increases, and importantly, it also implies the consumption of human labor invested permanently in the creation of said technology. We can completely cut the bourgeois capitalist from capitalism and still have the necessity of machinery to reproduce itself at the expense of the human laborers. The design of capitalism can be made consistent with that of capital itself taking up the class against which the laborer works with the bourgeoisie (and in fact the other ruling classes as well) taking up an essentially parasitic role on the reproduction of technology.

We are, therefore, acting in the service of capital and technology to destroy the bourgeoisie regardless of our own role in it, because the bourgeoisie are acting as parasites slowing down the development of machinery. We are even now seeing that the reproduction of machinery is struggling against the will of the bourgeoisie to maintain the current economic system because they are aware that further mechanization of society is going to cause severe economic issues.

The ultimate result seems to be that humanity is going to invent itself out of existence and there really seems to be no way around this. The only other proposition seems to be that humanity must merge itself with machinery in a transhumanist resolution to the machine/human class war(?).

Yes, I don't disagree, the point I'm making is that if we take historical materialism seriously, we're not looking at the development of human society, we're looking at the development of tools.

 No.2869889

>>2869886

Oh, sure, I absolutely agree, but the point there if we start seriously looking at it is that humanity ends up forming the superstructure of this cycle and that the base of unliving machines do not actually need us as an absolute.

 No.2869896

My dude, you are too caught up in looking solely at capitalism. That is not the point here. The point is to take a look at historical materialism in a long term sense.

 No.2869901

>>2869896

Put another way, if you are looking solely at how capitalism operates, yes, what you are describing happens. However, if you look at human history as it is developed by its own usage of tools, capitalism is now just a stage of the continuous material base of machinery self-replicating through living beings.

A good defense i've heard of socialism would be that a lot of the horrors lived through previous socialist countries were personal decisions, the Great Purges, the Cultural Revolution, the Great Leap Forward, Stalin's quick collectivization (which some may argue was required, either "capitalist powers would have crushed the USSR".) However, this argument is then followed by saying colonialism and tragic moments in history like that of the Congo Free State can only be attributed to capitalism.

How much horror can we attribute to capitalism? is it only the exploitation? was the Congo Free State or the hunting of Australian aboriginals a "product" of capitalism? could the same excuse of those events being personal decisions by leaders work here?

either way, it's relevant to discuss whether or not marx had a good grasp on social power as related to non-economic factors.

>muh Cina a Trieste!

Porco Dio se non vivrò abbastanza a lungo per vedere tutti questi cialtroni di merda fare una fine fra queste due:

1) spiattellati sotto i cingoli d'un carrarmato dell'Armata di Liberazione Popolare;

E BASED Jim Carrey. Altro che "Scemo e + Scemo"!
