She subsequently laid a bouquet on Hoxha's grave, and placed a wreath on the statue of Mother Albania, without commenting on the Albanian Communist party's human rights violations and suppression of religion.[6]:82

Hitchens pretty much had a hard-on hatred for Catholics so i'd take his complaints with a shaker or two of salt.
I mean some of the complaints are ridiculous when put into context.
>Albanian nun born in 1910 who went to Calcutta in the 50s to spend her life soothing the lives of Untouchable slumdwellers who were and are dying in the gutters
>WHY DIDN'T SHE SET UP MODERN-DAY HOSPITALS! Everyone knows indian doctors back then were keen on helping untouchables and even moreso untouchable lepers near their deaths!
>She took money from dictators and didn't improve those deathbeds into modern first-world conditions!
Etc etc.
Even the local communists think most of it's a bunch of bullshit.
Hindu Nationalists hate her though for being european and christian thus "colonialist".

Fairly understandable even ignoring the Jesuits newfound (i.e. since the 60s) reputation for heterodoxy.
The Franciscans and the Jesuits aren't on the best of terms (haven't been since their founding when the Jesuits "appropriated" the name of Jesus for an order) and the latter really don't live up to Francis of Assisi's charisms.
For instance the former have real actual poverty vows, the latter have "we're totally doing poverty you guys, it's just that the order lets us use all this order-owned middle-class stuff it owns free of charge" vows.

There are some very nice events in the bible. I doubt you've read it if you think it was written badly. Maybe you could get away with saying there are portions of it which are written badly, but there are some very nice portions of it to read and listen to.
I always liked going to church as a child because I liked listening to the sermons. I don't believe it now, but I still like listening to sermons.

>There are some very nice events in the bible. I doubt you've read it if you think it was written badly.
There are nice bits in it sure but they're pretty few and far between and most of it is either weirdly phrased like "God told X this, and X told Y this, and Y said to God, and God said to Y", or it's shit like "X, who begat Y, who begat Z" (comparison to LotR is maybe apt considering the Silmarillion). Not to mention all the contradictions and the Deus Ex machinas. If the Bible was released nowadays as a fiction book it would be crucified (geddit).
To be honest I haven't read it, I listen to a YT series on it. It's entertaining, sue me.
I have nothing against CC's but really now.

I'm extremely skeptical of any attempt to blend religion and politics because at some point it always becomes about the "higher purpose" of the church, not the needs of a living society that a holy book says is small beans compared to magic fairy tale land.
I also think Christianity is overly fetishized as the true "religion of peace" by liberals trying to shame baptist inbreds as some kind of hypocrite. It and Judaism are just as fucking barbaric at the core as Islam; hell, the most bloody religious wars in history were between Protestants and Catholics, and in Catholicism, the Pope can formally condone violence, not merely promise that God will be cool with it.
It might seem paradoxical at first how religious governments and rulers were always very right wing in ideology, but in reality it'd be strange if that were not the case. Communist and socialist thought are inherently materialistic and do not incorporate the church into their vision of government even if they personally attend every week–the opiate of the masses and all that. This is anathema to a pious man.

I mean most people are literally afraid of Islam because that's just the public's perception of it: most people in America probably hadn't heard of it before 9/11 or the far less successful 1995 WTC bombings.
It is as awful as it's said to be, but so are the religions we are used to, and we give those a break because we know that they don't define people. Similarly, Mormonism can be almost comically insane, but its followers often shock people by being genuinely nice.

No blasphemy but I can't wait for the revolution. I love the church but its gotten way, way too corporate. Just going back to the Prophet handpicking his successor and the Quorum voting on him, instead of the Prophet being the Sole of the Corporation of the CoJCoLDS, that alone would be pretty nice. Remove all that corporate stuff. We don't need it anymore.

Communitarians yeah but not communist, not Marxists. They didn't know any theory or think about workers vs. capitalists, means of production etc. They were just buying land collectively and letting the church manage a lot of its distribution because it was the most efficient way to create their own community, which they believed was necessary to prepare for the Second Coming.
That said, I'd very much like for this current generation to emulate and massively improve on a cool idea.
