Can we talk about hacking? What's the politics like in the hacking community?

I saw a bit of this good hacker/bad hacker schtick where the good hacker finds security holes in websites like facebook or google and reports that to them. I'm interested in if many hackers actually believe this kind of thing.

In Europe there used to be plenty of far-left (mostly anarchist) hackers, but now everything is overran by libertarian retards and corporate drones ("ethical hackers").

Some companies run bug-bounty programs, where you are allowed to attack them according to their terms, and if you find security holes and report them, they award you some money. It's pretty popular because money, fame, and libertarians being so retarded they don't notice they are working for free.

It's all dependent on the community. If you go to /cyber/ you'll find most of the sec guys there are anarchist. Outside the chans most are libertarian. The more corporate guys (whitehats) typically subscribe to the Californian Ideology.

There are plenty of guys that live off whitehat programs, but you have to be damn good I imagine. I ran a whitehat program for a company I was at, it's mostly just Indians with vuln scanner software expecting money, very few actually legit guys.

From the stand point of the common man the ethical hacker is the one who exposes reality, against the lies of the bourgeoisie.

For example the Sony hack: if they had quietly gone to Sony the user would have never known how badly compromised they were. The online dump of user info was the only practical way to warn the users.

Sure it's friendly to tell someone they've forgotten to lock their front door. But if a service ducks up people need to know they've been compromised, don't let them just sweep it under the carpet.

Obviously hacking govt lies is a whole other big game.

The rest of ethical hacking is just standard bourgeoisie exploitation of labour. Nothing new there.

"Hacking" simply means final self-made solutions to problems. It's being resourceful, coming up with something on-the-fly, etc. If you've ever dabbled with linux, you're probably a hacker. Ever messed around with your Windows Registry? You're probably a hacker. Ever written a script or programmed just about anything? You're a hacker.

Wipe your mind clean of this Hollywood-repurposed definition of hacking already.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.

Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

You are doing the same as what above copypasta does when posted unironically, it diverts discussion to etymology. And while both are still technically true, there is no use in fighting over petty terminology.

'Hackers' (hollywood style) should be comrades, and most of them aren't but they are nowhere near as morally bankrupt as the fags who work patching security holes for Silicon Valley and selling glorified regex AV software. There is quite literally nothing wrong with cybercrime and it's a good alternative to a job if you have the skills.

inb4 it exploits the workers

Words are important though, it's how we communicate. For example someone might call call copyright infringement "piracy" to try and make it seem seedier than it really is.
