Just because people turn to certain beliefs/hobbies because they're unsatisfied with their lives doesn't mean that the belief/hobby is inherently bad.

And that isn't even to say that sports/religious beliefs are always a coping mechanism. But there's a material reason why religious adherence has sharply declined recently (inb4 muh cultural merxism).
