What sort of anime is considered leftist?

Which anime would you recommend?

Anything from Ghibli, really.

Miyazaki is a well known leftist and he said it always has influence on his works.

>Madoka

Urobuchi, the writer, has said his father was a radical leftist, but I'm not sure about his own stance about it. Looking at Psycho-pass though, he does seem at least anti-authoritarian.

Pic related, it's one of the few times I've ever seen anarchism mentioned in anime, and in a good light at that.

Asano Ino is probably a leftist.

Pic related, Dead Dead Demon's Dededededestruction.

GitS does definitely have a pretty bleak view of late-capitalism.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (obviously) criticizes it as well, but Kumeta Kouji also joked that Communism=DPRK, so who knows.

Caramel Kitsch Yuugekitai by Ooishi Masaru is a hidden gem which describes some kind of agrarian utopia - one can argue if it's leftist or not.

Dutch from Black Lagoon is likely a maoist that fought with the Viet Cong.

The "I saw it online yesterday" makes it look like cynicism. I don't think he's being serious, but I don't know him much.

The author of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei made Joshiraku which had very nationalistic and right-wing jokes here and there, Kumeta is right-wing as far as I know. Although some people say he just does it for the edgy.

I can't say anything about the rest. Might I suggest to look into other authors:

For example, Mamoru Oshii, the director of GitS(you mentioned it) and writer of Jin-Roh participated in radical left movements in Japan in the 70s. He was literally fighting on the streets with cops along his classmates. He was confined by his parents though, after being ratted out by a cop. He wrote it in his own homepage (Japanese):

http://www.oshiimamoru.com/profile/profile_r02.htm

He then said that he has "lost his radicalism" after what happened, but looking at his works I'm pretty sure a bit of it remains in him. He's also good friends with Miyazaki, who's a well-known leftist too.

Ikuhara, the director of Utena and writer of Yuri Kuma and Mawaru Penguindrum, is also left-leaning (although more of the liberal kind). He said in an interview about Utena that he admired the radical left movements of the 70s and he took inspiration from it to direct Utena. He also recruited Seazer for it, who was known back them for the lyrics about revolution.

I also get left-leaning vibes from Imaishi, the director of TTGL, Kill la Kill, Panty & Stocking, or at least his creative team. But I have nothing concrete to back this up.

From now on only things I've read or heard from Japanese people:

- Toei Animation creative team: Toei is one of the few animation studios with a labor union, and it also has the largest one; they also formed the Federation of Cinema and Theatrical Workers Union of Japan and have been fighting for better working conditions ever since; thanks to this they have one of the best working conditions in the animation industry to date. It seems this shows in its creative team. Precure, one of the shows by their creative team, has had some moments in which they've triggered right-wingers too. Pic related.

- Bones studio creative team

- Seiji Takeda: known for being involved in the planning of FMA, Eureka Seven, Code Geass and Darker than Black, he's also the director of the left-leaning MBS TV station.

- Sho Aikawa: not sure about this one; he was the co-writer of Angel Cop which is basically /pol/ the anime, although it seems he took it over the writing just for the final part. It seems he turned left-leaning after that since he has then written things that have completely buttblasted Japanese right-wingers like UN-GO and Eureka Seven AO, which had an independent Okinawa in the setting which triggered Japanese nationalists pretty hard. He's writing Concrete Revolutio, an upcoming anime so we'll see. I'm personally ambivalent.

If I remember more I'll post them.

If we should use Lucaks' terms, he's definitely "Kafka" (ie existential alienation rather than social) but Dead Demon is definitely taking jabs at corporate influence over our politics, government blame-shifting but also the incompetence of the modern left.

Shimoneta. Not *leftist* but more like a light-hearted homage. 2ch agreed. It's a comedy about a small terrorist organization in an alternative Japan with an authoritarian government that polices free speech to keep a "healthy population" (very similar to the anti-degeneracy rhetoric of Nazis), and they revolt against it by teaching students about sex, spreading porn around and fucking around with authorities. They also make fun of antiquated traditions and ideals of purity.

Pic related, it's a full page advertisement in Asahi Shimbun, Japan's largest left-wing newspaper. It says "For our civil rights, and sex jokes!"

Haven't watched it, are there any elements that make you think so?

I've seen the director also directed Code Geass and Junketsu no Maria, both of which also have a heavy political tint.

>Haven't watched it, are there any elements that make you think so?

Yes, but it's hard to tell them without spoiling.

One of the themes is that the work of the space debris collectors is very important, but their pay is shit and they are looked down upon by others. It shows being a proletarian in space.

The main girl in the series, Tanabe, is very idealistic about space, but she discovers the truth fast. "Being an astronaut is so cool! etc." But her coworker tells: "We're just wage slaves like everybody else".

Imperialism also gets attention. The poor countries are shown to profit very little from space in contrast with the rich countries which profit the most from space exploration.

There's also the shitty organization called INTO (which reminds a lot of NATO, but is international). It actively maintains the status quo and does imperialism on behalf of the rich countries.

I could give more examples but I don't want to spoil it. There's also a man that wants promotion very bad but loses sight of how important his job actually is because of that. "Who's going to collect the garbage in space now, daddy?"

The anime seems also critical of artificial boundaries between people, like borders between countries (like you saw in the screenshots).

I could tell a lot more but I don't want to spoil. Mind you that the first few episodes are more funny and it gets more serious later on in the series.

I guess we'll have to put an eye on the director too, Taniguchi Gorou.

What about Junketsu no Maria?

It criticizes discrimination and the Catholic church and its political power and closed-mindedness pretty hard. Maria is a mindless pacifist though, you might not like that, but the show itself isn't.

In Gargantia ep 6, Ledo is concerned because he feels that he is overpaid because he doesn't need that much money to support himself, I'm not sure how to interpret that attitude. There was a single line that the advanced society Ledo is from doesn't have money. On the other hand, not necessarily related, that society is portrayed as not-fun with everyone emotionally neutral at all times.

 No.88

Gargantia is more fascism vs green party utopia, which is often the standard for most "political" anime in the spirit of Ghibli.

More like Japanese politics in general, sadly.

 No.96

I heard Gundam IBO and Concrete revolutio, both from current season, are pretty leftist.

There was an anime where a WWII vet talked abotu the militarists sending him to war and how his generation was mislead by them. What is the title of it? It was talked about in /leftypol/ proper

What do you mean? Then Japan's politics are liberal, because I've never seen Japanese people seeing politics in any way other than this dichotomy.

 No.110

Naw, mostly that "left" liberals see the world as a fight between a green petit bourg utopia and a mean grey commie-fascist (haven't you learnt about how horseshoes work?) empire where there is no fun allowed.
