I always saw liberalism as the ideology that people should be alowed as much freedom to do as they wish as possible. Even if it isn't the best thing for them and/or society.

Liberalism is, in essence the belief that people should be free to pursue whatever goals, lifestyle and choices they desire. Liberty is the key to liberalism.
It is a denouncement of slavery, destiny and moral absolutism.

Classical liberalism (US "libertarianism") says I have a right to not have people fuck with my shit ("negative" rights). Modern liberalism throws in more rights, like right to health care or food or blowjobs or whatever ("positive" rights), and then says you need to balance different people's rights, since having both positive and negative rights leads to conflicts of rights. (Really though positive vs negative is a false dichotomy, but that's a story for another time, children.)

Yeah, I didn't put enough emphasis on the "as much as possible" meaning "so long as it doesn't do direct harm to other people's freedom to do as they desire". And I'm still phrasing it poorly ;'(
