It's also a cultural thing, you're expected to be non-political, apathetic, or out-n-proud social liberal, otherwise you'll need to explain why you don't hate X/Y/Z groups. It's become tedious just to speak out against apathy or feel-good politics, the politics of instant gratification as opposed to long-term growth and improvement, or of fundamental rights.
For awhile, neo-cons ran with "muh national security" to infringe on liberties like >>11536 said, but such fads only last so long as the idea of a threat do. "Feel-goodism" never goes away. Both are always harder to roll back than to implement as well.
