I'd say when (if) they start doing things that only NASA does and demonstrates that space exploration can be done better privately. Then the bureaucrats in all space-related agencies will start demanding regulations in order to create some space-related state monopolies so they get to keep their jobs. Companies such as SpaceX might soon start to embarrass governmental space agencies and prove them unnecessary in more and more areas.

Pretty much the same what's happening with the war on drugs. It doesn't matter if there is not any reason to have it, because thousands of police agents and bureaucrats have their livelihood at stake on this, that's why they'll necessarily identify their personal welfare (aka not getting fired) with the common good and make arguments in favor of it.

I think the turning point will be before reaching Mars. I did read somewhere that Musk had planned sending manned trips to Mars and there was some talk on funding some colonies there. They announced it for a date fifteen years before NASA's plans. I think it is delusional to believe that government is going to allow private enterprise to reach Mars before they do.

I really wish they (SpaceX) did it. It would shut millions of statist mouths.

 No.14248

l'll give them 10 years tops. We will not see a nationalization in the traditional sense, but spaceX will be rendered totally dependant on the US government through regulation and budget control.

Space travel right now is unregulated because bureaucrats aren't rocket scientists and they don't want to stifle innovation. I see that changing very quickly once a couple competitors reach SpaceX's level, especially if there's an accident with fatalities.

"A rocket in the wrong hands," they will say, "is too dangerous for people to be trusted with. I mean, what if a terrorist sneaks in with 30 terrorist buddies all well versed in mission control training hold off the police and military long enough to drop the rocket on the nearest city?"

And then the push to become spacenoids begins in earnest.

SpaceX wouldn't exist if it wasnt because of government handouts.

 No.14388

not handouts, contracts, which it deserved.

Tesla is up on government subsidies.

 No.14428

>>14375

The need of an International Space Station would exist if government wouldn't have stepped in, and it would have been provided privately if the research done in there is really necessary (and therefore profitable).

Maybe not SpaceX, but lots of other private space agencies would exist if it wasn't for governmental intermission because government needs not to restrict its budget and provides unfair competition.

I doubt the experiments done in the ISS are very profitable or will be profitable in the meantime.

So thats what we are calling it now? Contracts?

No, it's a legit contract, a job from the government because the National Space Agencies couldn't do it cheaper. Instead of working voluntarily (and on fair terms) for another company, they're doing it for the government.

>not profitable

for the time being, and it is mostly as a side-mission. Their main source of income is satellite deliveries.
