The amount that people want it = the amount that it is necessary. Demand and supply.

But don't expect there to be one unified border. I personally don't know how the free market will choose to organise itself, but I'd guess that there would be many different borders for individual communities. By "community" I mean a voluntarily organised collective that basically says "Well guys, we all want protection, so lets all chip in a bit of money to create a good defence." Sound kind of like a government? Well it is a government. Only difference is that it's peaceful (has no right to initiate force), accountable (has no safety net) and efficient (will fail unless it does its job). Nothing wrong with non-violent collectivism.

Gated communities like you'd see in a suburb are totally possible. One company (or a federation of many property owners) develops the land and builds houses and only allows people who agree to a strict code of conduct to stay. They can discriminate as they wish and can homogenize utilities and services for the rest of their community.

You could wall off a city but after a certain size it becomes pointless. Nobody will want to conduct business in your town if they have to wait at the border for like two hours. Unless there's a very serious threat outside, you're better off allowing free travel.

Anything bigger than that is silly. Why wall off a whole country if there is no border?

Pretty much this. A "castle town" is about the largest gated community you could build.

Inside of the town is highly discriminatory and has strict standards, this is where the town's shareholders and main contracts live.

Outside of the town is pretty much open borders for whoever wants to leech off of the main economy, most of them aren't allowed in the town.

The simplest example I can think of is honestly Skyrim where the guards wouldn't let the lizard or cat things into the city.
