I got this from: >>>/lit/8884

Am I the only person who thinks there is an organized effort to turn natural and social sciences into the only valid methods of acquiring knowledge, in the public eye? I don't think it has to be a conspiracy, but could be, for all I know.

>"What is there about the climate of this city," Scheler waved around him, "that breeds so many god damned logical positivists?"

>"Well, Max," Mises replied, "in Vienna there are two million people, and there are only twelve logical positivists. So it couldn't be the climate."

I remember my criminology-professor ranting about positivism. He was a pretty cool guy.

 No.18853

Man, I used to get in arguments with this one guy, and every time I insisted on logical consistency, he called me a positivist and used that to dismiss my position.

So I went and studied the Philosophy of Science, and once I found out what the hell Positivism was, I thereafter thoroughly dismantled his argument.

Then I started realizing that it was everywhere. I noticed that everyone who fancies themselves a science enthusiast rejects everything but observational science. They try to apply falsificationism to everything, which sounds tempting until you start looking at things like Maths.

Now I've come to the conclusion that I'm a Rationalist surrounded by Positivists. I don't know if it's an organized effort. Personally I think it's just a seductive doctrine; just learn this "scientific method" flowchart and trust the priests–er, I mean scientists in the white robes and you can be smarter than everyone else! It's easy answers that don't challenge your underlying epistemological assumptions.
