If you've forgotten the name of a book you read, post a description here and hopefully someone will recognize it and tell you the name.

I'm looking for a book about a girl who becomes the first/only female wizard. I don't remember much of what happens in the book, but the way magic works is that wizards' magic is powered by the lifeforce of a person who starts to die after the wizard begins using them, and witch magic comes from the witch's own life. Also I remember that at the start the girl is a prostitute and she becomes the apprentice of some old wizard. inb4 equal rites

I'm looking for a book where some kid winds up in a game with aliens and the ambiguity about the fate of his planet for winning or losing said game. Something about no one knowing what happens if they win or not, but knowing that if they don't play the game, their planet goes boom regardless.

The one I'm looking for is kind of hard to find.

The plot, at least what I can remember, is this kid is trying out a new computer game, when one of the characters comes to life and zaps him with lightning leaving a scar. The kid must then go on to defeat other characters that come out too while keeping the whole thing a secret.

The cover shows the lightning guy phasing out of the monitor, an old CRT type which was cutting edge around the time I read this being circa '98, firing a bolt at the kid who is falling back in his chair. The kid is also a nerdy looking individual with huge glasses, and a scrawny frame.

Any help is appreciated as finding this has been killing me for the past year.

This one will be difficult, I read it a long time ago in Nigeria. The book concerns a man who places a curse upon a rival and marries a woman he was forbidden to, the consequence of said curse would entail misery, and eventually being killed by his own son. I vaguely remember it, and I doubt the synopsis is correct, and it's an African story, but if anyone can help I would appreciate it.

My mother read a book once. It's about a brilliant lawyer whose son is kidnapped, and she hires the mafia to get him back, in exchange for working for them. Her son is saved, but killed in an accident a while later, so she's fucked.
