Let's talk about writing instruments like Graphite pencils, Mechanical pencils, Grease pens, Felt-tip pens, Brush pens, Dip pens, and Fountain pens.

What do you use and why not something else? What's your favorite fountain pen? What was your first fountain pen? What will you try next? How do you write and what kind of font do you use, if any? Paper?

Is this appropriate here? I doubt /tech/ would be receptive and this is literally the only active board that's somewhat related to it. Just let it be, please mods?

I'm going to buy my first fountain pen. I'll be going to a local office store tomorrow to see if they have any fountain pens for sale so I can try them out, but if they don't have any I'll probably try to order a TWSBI Eco or a Lamy Safari. If all the store has is a Varsity or Platinum Preppy I'll get that.

I'd like to try some of Noodler's bright blue bullet ink. Gotta go with the small American company. It's just too bad the Noodler's Ahab or Konrad are flex or I'd get those for the 100% FREEDOM setup. Pretty sure I can just buy an extra #6 nib to put on them but it'd cost a bit more. Think I should go that route instead of Lamy?

 No.6486

I just got a fountain pen too but not gonna use it for writing anything per se, just for calligraphy.

 No.6487

my calligraphy sucks. thank g_d for keyboards.

and fountain pens seems a little impractical.

other than that i love buying stationary, usually with a black pen and a pencil i'm set.

Actually I just ordered a clear demonstrator Noodler's Ahab and Noodler's Baystate Blue. The Ahab comes with that free 2 dollar nib.

I'll be using it for writing every day, not calligraphy. more on this in the next bit:

>fountain pens seems a little impractical

In fact, they are more practical since you waste a lot of money on only a little, tiny amount of ink with a disposable ballpoint. It costs less over time if you buy a big bottle of ink and refill the pen.

I think you had in mind dip pens, which are the type of pens you dip in an inkwell and write with until the nib is dry again. There differences between Dip and Fountain pens. With a fountain pen over a ballpoint you can hold a lot more ink, you can change the ink easily and there are as many inks out there as you can imagine colors and more. You can customize it with different nibs, different bodies, and different mechanisms, and, finally, it's usually a lot easier to write with, which is the big reason to use them over other types.

>thank g_d

Your nose is showing, Chaim :^)

Anyways, the Ahab seems like a good enough pen to sort of be an heirloom. That's one of the reasons I want to get a fancy fountain pen.

by impractical i meant that the ink is wet on the page for a longer time, if you happen for whatever reason to smudge it, the page looks like shit and you have your hand dirty…

That lies entirely with the ink and paper. There are absorbent papers (most really cheap ones) and inks that dry as quickly as they get down, even when thick. The nib also matters since it controls how much ink is put down. A really fine nib puts out less and so needs less drying time.

That's the whole thing about fountain pens: you have choice.

It looks like you need to learn more about them, anon; you might find that you'd like one.

To be honest, I just use a pencil and tubular eraser(-pen).

I never cared for those old ink pens because the point was bothersome.

I use a Lamy 2000 with 50/50 R&K Scabiosa/Salix on a daily basis. It's nice.

looks clunky. but if it works for you…

Basic, cheap, plastic calligraphy or art pens. I enjoy using a real refillable fountain pen, but I don't like carrying it around and keeping track of it.

As stated by others, paper matters. Usually you can get by with some care to avoid smudging though.

As far as font and all that, just basic cursive for basic writing.

Also I like having a few dip pens for home use, signatures, and the occasional real old school letters. They're nice, but again cheap and simple artist pens.

Really, if one is curious, one can pick up this stuff in any halfway decent arts and crafts store for about ten bucks, getting a variety of nibs, pens, and inks to play with.

I normally write with a Remington Deluxe Model 5, which is convenient for when I want others to be able to read my things, since I have very illegible script. When I do write with a pen, I prefer to use a drawing pen because I like the way it glides over the paper quickly and effortlessly. The paper is more important than the pen, though. Handmade paper feels gorgeous.

I really don't understand why people care so much about the pen they use, though. It seems petty to me. The pen I write with rarely (if ever) has an effect on what I write.

I can't handwrite more than 200 words at a time, or else my hand ends up cramping up. I can't hold a pen properly. A guy once lent me his fountain pen and had a panic attack at how badly I was using it.

That seems kind of pointless to me. When I'm in class I just handwrite my notes. Typewriters are too slow to keep up with a presentation or lecture. It seems dumb that the entire room is filled with laptop computers, though. I guess paper isn't good enough for them.

 No.6595

It's rare to find someone who both wants to use a typewriter and is willing to actually go through with it. The main issue is he can't post on chans from his classroom that way.

I also use cheap pens. Among my favourites are -

Reynolds Grippy, has a simple ink barrel and writes broad lines

Parker Beta, comes with plunger

Wing Sung 233, comes with eyedropper

For ink I use Camel Black.

 No.6769

Good pens for note taking? I tried a fountain pen on line paper but that paper is really thin and it's not worth getting good paper just to take notes on considering the amount of notes you need to take. Preferably <$20.

Just get a gel-pen or roller-pen from Uni-ball or Pentel.

I use a mechanical pencil because I'm not a luddite fuck living in the past century.

These were my favorites for a long while but my last one broke and they stopped making them in 0.5 lead sizes.

 No.6847

Standard 0.5 mechanical pencil markings do not stand out much on paper, so you have to use 0.7 extra-dark leads, which are expensive.

Better to use gel or roller.

 No.6848

>>6804

Also color leads cost more money. Even felt tips are way better.
