carl sagan and asimov's non fiction are a good start.
i particularly liked the demon haunted world.
seems to me a better,less polemic version of Dawkins' (PBUH) "the god's delusion".

Chemist myself, General Chemistry by Chang and Organic Chemistry by Hart is a good start. Really depends on what subject you would like to dive into.

The most important thing is to be able to read scientific papers yourself though. There's a lot of hogwash being published, especially within humanities, for that I would suggest that you download and read Surely you're joking mr.feynman
