Has anyone read the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson? I am on book 5 of 10 (of the main series, haven't gotten to side stories yet) and really, really, enjoy it. I have yet to meet anyone who has actually read them though.

I'm still on book 1 between chapter 5-10. Read it half a month ago. I might restart it again since it has been a long time. I took an interest on litRPGs instead even though most of them has shitty writing.

 No.6668

I have only read the first book. I liked the world-building but did not like the ending. I am unsure whether I should pick up the second book.

I've got the first book. I'm trying to make time to read it. I hear nothing but good things about it, from what I've seen (mostly on the internet) it seems like it's arguably the third most hyped big fantasy series behind ASoIF and WoT, and rising fast.

I usually don't read fantasy series one book after the other, but rather read one then read other stuff for a couple months before I come back to it. Do you think it would be difficult to read Malazan like this OP?

I'm this guy, read the first book last week. I thought it was pretty good. He cuts out a lot of fluff, Erickson has pretty insane plot+action/filler+description ratio compared to other big fantasy writers I've read.

Moved onto Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb just because Erickson's books are expensive to get used.

Sorry about the double (now triple) post, the website was offline.

Yeah, been happening a lot lately.

Don't worry about it.

yeah I just smashed through the bonehunters, about to devour Reapers Gates

top tier stuff matey, Erikson clearly has no time for useless expository dialogue and is absolutely diabolical in terms of anticipating and surprising the reader, deforming classic fantasy tropes. Likely from his time DMing- the series has its origins in a homebrew tabletop setting afaik.

Some of the characters in the series betray their origins as PCs in his early D&D days- I have my suspicions about mappo/icarium and dancer/kellanved.

Sometimes a little preachy and likes to use his characters to soapbox but clearly defined and easy to speed over.

would def recommend.

Also karsa is an absolute sick cunt
