You are probably stuck with a ye olde highschool tier required reading syllabus, The Great Gatsby, 1984, and so on. Your teacher's not going to let you bust out some genera trash, however cool or artistic it may be. Also, you probably want to lean toward a slimmer novel. No doorstoppers, no need busting your ass over this.

If I could have my way in this situation, I'd try for something from Graham Greene. They might be confused thinking you said John Green, letting you read from a real writer instead.

But take a look at those threads. There's a few in there nipping at the ankles of high literature that could fly in a school setting.
