personally the non scholastic material, which in my case involved a lot of greek and roman history, were biographies of emperors written by italian historians. i doubt they exist in english.
i can advise you reading roman historians.
livius, svetonius, tacitus,sallustius, ceasar, plinius letters… and so on…
what's better than primary sources?
