Sup lit,
So I was thinking it might be fun to do something like a reading group here. I know halfchan lit has done something like this a couple of times, and I thought it might be cool to do something like that on here. If nothing else, it would be nice to have one or two books that a bunch of us had read recently to have some common ground for discussion. Anyway, I had been thinking about reading pic related since its December, and thought that it might be fun to read as a reading group sort of book, particularly because its short and fun.
If you have comment/suggestions, let me know, and if you think it would be fun to join in, I was thinking of reading it over the course of next week (December 7-13)

I'm down. I vote for a classic, but I'm not very fond of Dickens. I'll still read it if everybody is in agreement, though.

Random fun factoid: the last meat-space book club I belonged to managed to make it through all of one meeting before going tits up due to budgetary constraints. That plus the chief organizer got bored with watching the town aspire to becoming the next Detroit, and wandered off to find a real job.
Ditto the poetry club.
Still, it was fun even for all of one session.
In addition to a reading list of my own that I am pursuing for deliberate study, I insist on taking detours at will. I'm currently rereading Jennifer Government as one such detour to my list.
I'm in favor of a reading group, but I don't know how well it might go over. It's tough to get a consensus on reading material, plus getting people to do interesting reports or give insightful feedback.
Still, give it a shot. I'll keep an eye out and ACC seems to be a good idea in terms of length, etc.

I liked that book. The criticism on libertarianism is not very original, but I've seen worse. The sense of humor was great, though.
No.7760
Well I'm glad to see pretty generally positive responses.
Also, I think its worth saying that i'm not particularly attached to 'A Christmas Carol,' I mostly just thought it fit the bill of being good, short, and free online/easy to find a physical copy. If anyone wants to suggest another book, I'm happy to discuss it/set up a strawpoll so we can vote as on it.
>>7744
Yeah I know we don't have a lot of people here. I will say, part of my goal with doing something like this is to liven /lit/ up a bit. And if you'd like to read along and/or talk about the book, I'm sure I (and everyone else) would enjoy an extra voice in the discussion.

Why not do a tea party with another board? The one between >>>/liberty/ and >>>/fit/ brought new users to both boards.

I vote for The Red Badge of Courage or Oedipus Rex. Just something comfy to start off with.
Mostly because I just bought the two.

I'd say we either invite one of these, or we arrange a cross-board tea party with all of them. We can add the other ones you mentioned too, but I don't visit them.

>>>/bane/ is fun, and you gotta admire how consistently they are baneposting and how they managed to create an everlasting fountain of new memes out of a single stupid scene. And they also caused two plane crashes with no shurvivorsh.
>>>/fit/ is all about self-improvement. Well, at least 20% of the users care about that, there's also a bunch of /r9k/-fags and faggots with new years resolutions.

Not sure about the others. Eh. In the spirit of the holidays, whatever. The more the merrier.
Thinking about the reading material: I'm familiar with the Frankenstein story as done in various media, with all sorts of interpretations. It's been done to death, clichéd into the dust, not worth revisiting except … I had never actually read the original. When a Dover edition copy of Mary Shelley's work crossed my desk I gave it a shot for a laugh thinking I would toss it aside before finishing. Surprise, the exemplar of all the imitation and clichés is astoundingly good, so much so it felt like something truly fresh and original.
Lesson learned.
Everyone's familiar with the story of ACC but I'm hoping to have the same experience with the original work as I had with Frankenstein. If we're still considering, I'm for this.

Sorry I haven't been particularly active, I came down with something and slept most of yesterday.
It seems to me that if we're going to invite people from other boards, it would be best to be clear about which book we're going to read. Which is my oblique way of responding to >>7773 that why don't we read ACC now, and if people decide they enjoy this sort of thing we can do it again in January with Red Badge of Courage.
Anyway, the other bit is that the cross board stuff sounds great, and if its alright, I'd like to delegate that bit to you guys. I figure between the fact that I don't really use any other boards, and being about to go back to bed, I'm probably not the best person to go out inviting the masses to visit.

To clarify my question, because there will be boards which will have nothing to do with the chosen book no matter what, and because tea parties should be rare, we should bring as many boards as possible to this one. Does anyone have a good reason not to invite lewd boards like /monster/ or /pone/ ?
No.7896

>/pone/ ?
Since I've been vigorously spamming their Next board's report queue (if two or there quirked-out reports per week can be considered spamming), I suppose this is a good time to point out that /lit/ is probably a secondary board at best. Everyone has their home boards and noodles around here only on occasion. So mixing things up a bit can't be bad, albeit it might come as surprise to see how wide our users interests are spread.
No objections here.

Alright readers, I think we ought to go ahead and pick the book.
If my count is correct, there are 4 suggestions: A Christmas Carol, Oedipus Rex, The Red Badge of Courage, and Mein Kampf.
So, here's what I suggest: 2 rounds of voting.
1st round you vote for as many books as you would like out of the 4.
2nd round is between the top 2 from round 1, and will start in 24 hours or so from posting.
Round 1 here: http://strawpoll.me/6255980
Also, I'm down with inviting basically any boards. I figure as long as they can read, they can contribute to discussion.
No.7977
Could someone familiar with >>>/tg/ or >>>/philosophy/ invite them? I invited >>>/cyber/ , but they didn't respond.

Ok, round 2 of voting on book. Christmas Carol and Oedipus are currently in the lead, so vote on which one you want.

It can not be helped. 8chan's state is completely bonkers at present due to current efforts to finish the migration to Next. The weirdness is everywhere, not just /lit/.

Yeah I went back and looked at the catalog to see if there was something up, looked at the post about the front page not refreshing, and realized that was what had happened to me. At least the other people looking at the thread were smart enough to find the poll, so I'll keep it going for another day or so then call it. What I'd like to do is call it tomorrow afternoon sometime so that we can read it over the weekend, assuming that works for everyone.

Well I'm glad you like Dickens, because I think its time to call the strawpoll. So, everyone who still has the energy (I know its been a while), grab your copy of A Christmas Carol and get ready for some reading. Its real short and I'm sure almost every bookstore in the country has a copy (also its free on the internet), so I think we should start discussion on Tuesday or Wednesday. So, have fun reading and I'll be back in a couple of days.
