So what's your opinion on the Beats? Favorite work? Favorite Beat? Or do you believe Capote was accurate in describing them with the following quote: "That's not writing, that's typing."

I'd have to say Kerouac is my favorite author of the group, but Naked Lunch by Burroughs is probably my favorite novel. Planning on rereading their stuff. I first read On the Road when I was 13, and it certainly left an impression. So that's where I'll be starting. I'm pretty much wondering if I'll feel anything now that I'm considerably older and more experienced in both lit and life. While I don't think they were these amazing, unparalleled writers, I do think their writing is very inspirational and full of life. Can't stand Ginsberg, though.

i can tell you that if the adaptation of naked lunch is even remotely faithful i don't find it remotely appealing.

an i have the feeling this applies to the whole movement.

You mean the Cronenberg film? It's not so much about Naked Lunch as it is about Burroughs and a bit about his writing. Naked Lunch (novel) is much better, if you have the stomach for it.

>an i have the feeling this applies to the whole movement.

Absolutely incorrect. They all had their own styles and wrote about various things. Burroughs wrote nightmarish stories about his drug use, Ginsberg tried to emulate Whitman, and Kerouac wrote about America and the fervent search for love, knowledge, and happiness. Also his ultimate failure. It's worth noting that unlike the other two, Kerouac was pretty conservative and became distant from the movement as time went on. Hipsters misconstrued his writings as teachings, and did not live or write freely or with the same level of passion. Intentionally or not, the Beats helped give birth to the "creative" left of the 60's, but they lacked the heart and soul the Beats possessed. Just a brief history lesson.

If anything, I would recommend On the Road. Maybe Junkie.

Samefag here. Forgot a few things.

>Hipsters misconstrued his writings as teachings, and did not live or write as freely or with the same level of passion and reason. They were often just copies of the characters found in On the Road, and not much more.

Also, check out Ginsberg's Howl if you're remotely into poetry. Particularly the poem Howl. Dont let the length scare you, it's worth reading just to see how rhythmic and full of life it really is.

Again, people try to emulate that style and you get the shit found in spoken word and amateur poetry. Only their missing that beat and passion.

I tried to read On the Road. It was painfully dull and I gave up halfway through.

Thanks ded, but I disagree. You're either illiterate and/or just plain stupid. I would give you Ginsberg and Burroughs, but that's too easy. Especially when the latter based his career upon degeneracy. However, Kerouac wrote about America and his experiences similar to Twain or Whitman. Filth wouldn't be the word I would use to describe him. They all made major contributions to the world of literature whether you like it or not. What's considered decent by you?

I like the influence that Burroughs had on Throbbing Gristle's music, but the beats don't interest me very much. I don't find drug addictions and other degeneracy very appealing, so I don't imagine the movement would have much to offer me.
