what i had in mind was conrad's "the duel".
napoleon is really in the background. if i rememeber correctly he actually meets one of the two main characters, but it's just a fact that you are told, you don't actually see it happen.
what made me suggest that is the pride of being officers in napoleon's army both characters feel and how important it is to them and that it's precisely what helps them relate with each other.
btw ridley scott destroyed that and made harvey keitel's character a lunatic. a bad adaptation if you ask me.
anyway it's a short read.
and then there could be that part of les miserables about marius' father.
