Chekhov's gun:

Checkhov's gun means not wasting details. You don't mention the tree unless you're to use it later in the story. When God warns them not to eat of the tree, its a form of foreshadowing.

What other tropes can you think of?

 No.9023

I hate the word "tropes".

Chekov's gun is meant to be writing advice for mysteries: "Never use red herrings in mysteries." Trying to apply it to the bible is retarded.

Checkhov's gun means not writing about things you're not going to talk about. The principle applies to all fiction, and the bible is fiction.

>Checkhov's gun means not writing about things you're not going to talk about

You are talking about it by writing about it. Chekov's Gun is, once again, writing advice. Not some sort of principle.

> and the bible is fiction.

Read Sophie's World or something and try to learn about what the bible is before you tip your fedora in public.

My source tells me that Chekov's gun is not wasting any details but writing details if you're going to use it. If it's not going to be used/not relevant, don't write it at all.

He did use the tree later on because the fruit hangs on it which Eve later ate that signifies original sin IIRC. I don't memorize the passage of the Bible you're referring to, but that's what I remember about the genesis.

Chekov is a short story writer. Short stories and Novels have different sensibilities. In a novel, you can describe the gun hanging on the wall for characterization and setting. In a short story, the author is forced to be economical; the gun must go off.

That's called setup.

>>9025

Setup applies to anything. The storyteller should tell you how he ignored the warnings or that there weren't any.

>>9026

It's neither. It's an allegory about how rulecucks punish any dissent.

 No.9038

Making a detail essential to the plot is not the only way not to waste it. Mentioning some huge conflict from twenty years ago can be a setup for later plot development, but it can just as well be used to make the world seem more lively and grand, and there is nothing wrong with that. If you include something in your story, you should be able to answer "why". If you can give an answer, then congratulations, you passed the first hurdle.

>>9037

>It's neither. It's an allegory about how rulecucks punish any dissent.

You're not making any sense.

 No.9043

>>9042

It's neither fiction or real. It's a warning to those who do as Adam, who tried to excuse himself. Evil does not allow excuses.

 No.9044

>>9043

Ah, I was confused because I thought you were replying to >>9031 instead of >>9025.

I can't delete posts because my cookies self destruct and I don't remember passwords.

>When God warns them not to eat of the tree, its a form of foreshadowing.

no. it's a simple warning followed by the respective punishment.

and the idea of wading through the tropes of tv tropes on this does not agree with me at all.
