Tracing can be good. Using it in a finished work is super tacky, but there's things called anatomy tracings that can test your knowledge of anatomy and help you solidify it.

It's only detrimental if you do it all, most, or half of the time.

I draw from reference most of the time, but I only trace whenever I need to understand additional information that I've missed initially. These scenarios for instance (see: >>1903).

You can use tracing to troubleshoot your problems when drawing from imagination. What you do is try to draw something from imagination, then next to your drawing you trace over something and compare them to see where discrepancies are. It's really easy to spot errors when you overlay line art.
