The problem is an oversaturation of communities. Artists are being pulled towards countless proper forums, imageboards (even on this very website there's like 8 drawing boards) and online galleries like tumblr and deviantart.
In my opinion imageboards are the best format for someone who's still working at developing themselves artistically because there's no identity or permanence with whatever you post. However /ic/ (the original drawing board) is not very lively itself considering how long it's been around and that really makes it hard for us newer boards to pick up steam.

Yeah, it's rough because honestly the joy of drawthreads is all the suggestions are from whatever board you already love. So I drew a shitton of 40K and D&D related shit for people in the early days of old /tg/. Years ago old /co/ was full of great drawfags, and they all either moved on just because they had real work to do or got pushed out because /co/ just became more and more a batch of assholes that don't enjoy anything. And when both those places declined I tried to keep up with the offshoot boards and hope for the best, and it was good for a while, but it's all dead now. I don't even know where guys like GreenMarine and Chink went off to, even old collaborators of mine are hard to get a hold of now. I guess that's just life.
The only thing holding this, or any art board, back, is people probably feel like they would just be shits to come here to comment or ask for art but not draw. The ones that want to come and draw mostly feel they'll never be any good, God knows I've felt that feeling when I was younger (my current confidence level astounds even me). But I'll try to keep with the board, since each of us is responsible for making whatever places we go to better places. Even if I don't draw much for the board itself, I'll try to check in and comment or help if at all possible.
>>1011
I think I made a tumblr or blog thing for Gamergate stuff 8 months ago, but not for art. Maybe I'll get one made soon, though I am mostly trying to figure out final character designs and page layouts for my current project. My man. One of the reasons I decided to become an artist (though only did so recently because I'm an idiot) is because of the drawfags on /tg/ like Miko, Chink and Mr. Culexus (even if he never improved much his stuff was still kind of charming at any rate) and the others whose names escape me. I don't remember why I left /tg/ but I still have great memories of the board itself and all the epic me-mes we had. In the end I suppose I was a poser that was lead there by the Dawn of War PC games though.

I wanted to take out an ad on google but the content of the website itself probably won't let me do that; maybe I should try anyway, but I don't suppose you know of any alternatives to that off the top of your head do you? I've got more money than time to be honest!

No ideas at the moment, but I'll sleep on it and see if anything comes up. And as I hit them from time to time (mostly just to warm up before whatever I am focused on the rest of the day) I'll try to bring up /loomis/, just slip it in… when no one is looking…

Do you know about the effect literature has on revolutions?
Well, this is only a theory but we need to drop subtle propaganda and confirm peoples unhappiness on the 4ch boards. It is necessary for planting roots for change and movement to the 8ch boards. It may not even be posting exactly where to go. But communicating values or difference that are here, without ever telling people where it is, is probably a good start.

IDK I just want a cool BBS-type thing full of friendly people who can chat about art and the philosophy of art and doing professional work. :( And general off-topic life stuff too. I guess conceptart.org comes close but it's too big of a community for me to feel like I'd be "integrating" with any real meaning.
I guess I could start one cause I might have enough Tumblr followers/art friends to do so but it's also one of those things where you don't want to announce a party and invite everyone and then no one comes. This is even worse because people can publicly see that nobody came.

Keep working man. You need to familiarize yourself with the features a bit more, such as what the nose looks like at different angles and so on. Also your feet, while mostly hidden, look kind of silly (our feet don't form a "cup" like that at the heel if you know what I mean). It's awesome that you're drawing my main man, and you will improve (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX0MrnzBJ8M), but you should consider drilling more fundamentals from Fun With a Pencil (http://tinyurl.com/npmgqyt) etc. in between any finished works like this you decide to make, for sure.
Also line weight my man.

That would absolutely be appropriate, in fact I think people should do both, really. I need to make a playlist of long free art videos people can watch while they work out that will help them memorize things like anatomical landmarks and so on. Proko's videos are pretty good for that (his free videos are a bit short though)

I'm going to make a roll game for general drawing and one for /co/ I think. I believe these kind of "games" are a great way to inspire/force people to practice their drawing (on imageboards anyway), particularly of things they wouldn't otherwise draw. I mean, they still might not but it will really help the ones that do.

This roll game will allow for possibilities for lewd, correct?
Either way, that's a great idea. Are you thinking for the /co/ one "draw established character" or "design a hero with this theme"? I was going to draw a few ideas for the shared universe project I see on /co/ sometimes, but nothing was organized at all and I didn't want to sort through tons of shit just to get the gist of any characters worth drawing. Sometimes I just want a simply idea I can run with, makes me feel like Stan Lee ran by with a half thought and told me to have 22 pages done by monday (which is what I assume happened a lot).

There will definitely be lewd possibilities. I will probably do the /co/ one first because it will be less dry than a general drawing roll game (even if it won't be as useful to as many people…).
>Are you thinking for the /co/ one "draw established character" or "design a hero with this theme"?
I was planning on doing established characters but I'd like to get people using their noodles to make their own as well so I'll try and think of a way to incorporate that. Maybe I'll give each character a sort of generic "sub-title" that a person can make an original character of based on a broader theme instead of drawing the character itself. For example "Star - Magical Girl", "Jenny XJ-9 - Robot Girl", etc.

That sounds cool. And if people want to roll twice they can make the second on the first character's rival, to get them fighting.

Thanks man. I can actually pick out a few, such as her hair not conforming to the shape of her head very well, the overuse and abuse of line weight rather than a more conscious approach (this is debatable, but I just don't like the result it yields), the cloth on shoulders doesn't look like real cloth wrapping around a shoulder, the lines on the body of her dress (the ones defining the folds) looks out of place, and it would've been better had I just let the lighting define those forms.
They're all very nitpicky gripes I have, but I think being nitpicky towards yourself is necessary.

I'm not good with tutorials and I probably shouldn't be trying to teach anything since I'm not very good myself, but I'll explain how to use RGB sliders and why I use them and that'll probably explain what I mean.
RGB is additive mixing, in other words, it emulates the way light mixes. To get the hue, you just need to change the arrangement of the sliders, some of it is simply knowing how additive mixing works, and the rest is simply moving the middle slider between the two extreme sliders. (In the example, the middle slider was the Blue slider.) Saturation is the distance between the two extreme sliders. And finally lightness is seen at the center of the two extreme sliders. Lightness can also be seen on a triangle color wheel and a HLS slider as seen in the example.
Lightness is usually where people get tripped up when I explain this. It's not the same as value. Lightness is how much light is being emitted from a surface, value is how dark a color is relative to its hue. Full saturated yellow has a lighter value than full saturated blue, but they have the same lightness of 50%. I made a gif a while back that shows the difference very well, the greyscale value of the image doesn't show light on the woman's face, but the lightness does. This is because value is more concerned about the hue than how much light is being emitted. (If you want to see the lightness of an image, you just need to turn down the saturation instead of setting a grey layer to color.)
The reason I use RGB is simply because I think better with additive mixing and it also allows me to apply colored light to a surface with a bit more accuracy than a HSL or triangle color wheel. (This is mostly useful in reflected light, as seen in the third image.) RGB just helps me think with light more, which is probably why people compare my drawings to 3D models. I kinda get disappointed when people compare my stuff to 3D models, though. I guess that just means I'm not good enough at drawing yet and I need to study smarter.

Holy shit, I think I'm actually getting it this time. I've always been using the damn default HSB picker in Photoshop. You've convinced me to abandon that and try RGB picking.
I had to test out your GIF and it blew my mind that the destaurated copy and the convert to greyscale copy were different.
How do you do that in the third image though? Do you have any good color tutorials, or would you mind walking step by step through the process? Like I would say that is an orange sphere, maybe you were thinking of an orange. How do you then pick your highlight color using RGB? It's like a…tan-ish color? How do you find your shadow color, that almost brown orange? My colors always come out flat and weird, I WISH my shit was being compared to 3D models, that's a step above my current art game.
But thanks again for the explanation, I assure you it did not go to waste!
No.2453
>>2437
Try using a mix of RGB and HLS, you can change the lightness faster and it makes RGB a little less frustrating at first. (I wish I knew this when starting out.) Also, do photo studies so you can see the patterns of RGB transitions.
Unfortunately, I don't have any color tutorials. I tend to stay away from tutorials because most of them are made by people who don't know what they're talking about. (I'm no exception.)
As for the third picture, I just used vacuum lighting. White light and a black shadow. I often see people say color theory means shadows need to be cool, but shadows are actually naturally black and the temperature that they have depends on the environment, such as reflected light, ambient light, and secondary light. The addition I do in the RGB sliders is taking the light I want, estimating each slider's distance from 0 and adding it to the local shadow's color. In the example, R is very distant from 0 and GB are closer to 0 and pretty much the same distance, so I move the sliders on the local shadow up around that relative distance. If you noticed skin looks saturated when its own reflected light hits it, that's why, it's increasing the already high RGB values and keeping the low ones low. Knowing how much to add is something you learn from studying photos and such.
I strongly recommend studying with it a bit first before you use formulaic approaches. Knowing how to do it is fine, but knowing why it works is gives you a new level to work from.
