Link and Zelda, even Impa and Tingle get their own thread, but no love for the King of Evil? Let's remedy that!
Post Ganondorf, discuss Ganondorf, tell us your favourite iteration. For me, it's a tossup between TP and WW Ganondorf. TP had the best design imo, but WW had the best characterisation - I really liked the idea of an older wiser Ganondorf who was also somewhat presented as a tragic figure unable to let go of the past. How about you?

I agree with you there, anon. The TP and WW designs of Ganondorf were by far the best. I also enjoy Dark Beast Ganon in TP though. Hopefully they can do something cool with Ganon/Ganondorf in the next Zelda game. What are your hopes for the future of the King of Darkness?

>I really liked the idea of an older wiser Ganondorf who was also somewhat presented as a tragic figure unable to let go of the past

I was thinking about this the other day. Link and Zelda live natural lives, having their ancestors pick up the mantles of courage and wisdom, but there's typically just one Ganondorf, watching the cycle repeat with no end… It's no wonder he's filled with such hate, when you think about it, and I'd like to see this explored more in a Ganon-central game. It's a shame that Zelda doesn't have something like Metroid Prime scanning, which opens up the lore but keeps some of its mystique.

We need more of what drives Ganondorf, or why he might have forgotten his original plight, if any. We know that he's linked to Demise in some way, but I'd like the introduction of a kind of exploitable, relatable weakness or flaw that made him the prime candidate for the 'incarnation' of the demon king.

The harshness of life for the Gerudo tribe has been touched upon, after all. Perhaps a future game could hint at a freaky, ritual relationship between the Gerudo shaman (Twinrova) and Demise, who promised to give the tribe 'power beyond anything in Hyrule' or something. Have a game with more focus on the desert, or with some sort of mechanic that demonstrates the Gerudo's standard of living.

Then we'd realise that Ganondorf was, at first, a victim of circumstance - that he has long since forgotten any original motive, and exists only in his lust for power ;-;

Ganondorf in a way was born a victim of circumstance if you think about it. The ending of SS pretty much spells out he is the incarnation of Demise's hatred. He exists solely to hate and fuck up Link, Zelda, and everything they hold dear.
Except said hatred gained sentience and personhood. Going by his speech in WW it's very possible that at first he genuinely wanted to improve living circumstances for his tribe before the "hatred instinct" kicked in and drove him to make Hyrule as shitty as possible in OoT. Ganondorf does not have free will. He could find out exactly what he is and it wouldn't change anything, because even if for whatever reason he wanted to he'd be unable to alter his nature and stop being evil. Guy's a tragic monster that must be destroyed because reconciliation and rehabilitation are simply outside the realm of possibility for him.

Hyrule Warriors made me realise I'd like to see Ganondorf team up with Ghirahim. Shitty though SS was, Debbie was a fun character, not to mention Demise's sword. No disrespect to the trident, but seeing Ganondorf repair and wield the Master Sword's counterpart would make for an awesome plot point.

Even if he cannot change his ways, I wish to see Ganondorf as a character confronted with the facts of his existence. He's always the 'big bad' with the simple 'rule the world' motive, and the tragic or more twisted elements of evil get delegated to secondary baddies like Zant. This has been done for good reason, but it's also making a stale character out of one with a lot of potential.

The 30th anniversary is coming up, and I think that Nintendo either needs to do something completely different with the story, or give us the ultimate confrontation between courage and power – something similar to what The Dark Knight Returns did with the Joker.

The latter could feature a learned Link or Zelda that pities Ganondorf's futility, and actually comments on the series' cyclical nature, wishing that it didn't have to go like this. Ganondorf, of course, would either succumb completely to mindless, demon-fueled bloodlust, or make the obligatory comment that it's 'too late' for anything else.

It's tropey, sure, but for good reason. I think it would add a lot of depth to the series as a whole.

Agreed. I'd love to see Ganondorf portayed in a more deep, and almost prophetic way. A Ganondorf charcter like that could weave is some great story elements and be one puzzle piece in a truly astounding Zelda game.

Your people…
They think they live off of this land.
In truth, they live only in legends and stories.
So many tattered books and pictures, speaking of the golden light of Hyrule.

They mimic only the pride of their ancestors.
"See how the fields grow, the rivers run, the wind blows…
See how we are the chosen people of the Gods."

Your people do not paint the desert.
They do not write of war.
They cannot conceive of children born to a cursed tribe.

Their stories are paltry.
They show nothing of the truth.
The happenstance of light and shadow is as much a part of their golden land as the earth beneath their feet!

Princess…
Boy…
I have seen your faces a hundred times.
You might see mine only once.
But no matter how this ends, you will heed my words.
And if you live to see yet another great mural of the wise Zelda and her hero in green, triumphing over the demon thief…>>322

You will know no pride…

You will know only your helplessness,
the wicked nature of this land,
and the indifference of your foul, departed Gods!

> I also enjoy Dark Beast Ganon in TP though.

Eh, I somehow really disliked that form of his (pure?) demonic incarnation that always breaked out when he is kill or got to be a permanent in the timeline of decline were he won.

Of course, a beast makes for a good symbol of uncontrolled rage, but his bipedal pig form looked more demonic and is in line with the older games. I mean, most bosses in Zelda are demonic animals, the last one being bipedal accentuates that "finalboss!" feel imo and seems a bit more prideful then something that crawls on all fours.

Which begs the question what is up with the piggyform?

Since SS brought up Demise id think he would break out of his vessel ganondorf (or whatever he choosed before) in his godly appearance of a flaming greyscaled giant, but this is apparently not the case in any game that came thereafter concerning to the timeline.

Did demise's gregiant form degenerate into the piggish demon due to the wearing process of continuous reincarnation, as a punishment by the gods to insult his pride, or did he just choosed this form because he liked it more in the end or what?

The pig being demise when he is overcome by rage instead of a controlled state were he can appear more human is not a good explanation because the first zelda games that were made assume that ganon-piggod of evil is able to control the world and his legions of demons instead of just smashing shit while screaming in a dungeon until the hero encounters him.

This gameseria really is in need of an overaching consistent theology about how gods, their planes of existence (darkworld, sacred realm, hyrule and Termina) and their incarnations work in order to satisfie fan-autism and give a healthy basis for interesting storylines that base any deeper or tragic elements on more then speculation.
