ChaosEsqueAnthology

ChaosEsque Anthology (Xonotic mod/fork/etc/standalone)
http://www.lgdb.org/game/chaosesque-anthology

Release 55:
This update has been a polishing update, with a new feature aswell:
Oil ocean mutator: you can now set oil level, if near the vapour level of
the oil, enflamed things will spread fire on the oil. The rate is settable
by cvar, currently set to a global max of 10 spreads per second, a per-entity
think interval of 2 seconds, and a 30 percent chance of deciding to spread
per think interval (0.1, 2, 0.3);

Bugfixes for mines: A bug that has been in xonotic for along time (since
it had mines) has been defeated. The bug was that if a mine was following
(ie attached to a vehicle or mover etc) something and that something dissappeared
the mine would then unfollow it and just stay static. Now for map movers of
the map this might have been fine, their coords are global (IIRC, might be wrong).
For sticking to vehicles, trees, etc, this caused the mine to appear
at 0 0 0+ offset origin, which made life there troubling. When the minelayer
was added there weren't many (or any?) vehicles in xon, and no foliage system/mutator
so testing wasn't done for that. Now the mines (minelayer, landmine, atmine)
if they lose what they're following/attached to remove themselves in 0.1 time.

Bot ai code work: bots know how to throw grenades, drop mines, bury mines if
grenades and mines are enabled. This includes flashbangs and smoke grenades.

Some Gimp work, creating an oil texture and adding it to the caethaver2 tex pack.
,norm map for a wall used in sideloop map, etc.

Misc Updates (ex: to bury a mine press J (it must be on ground/snow/grass/dirt/etc).

Coop FPS game

Is there a libre 3D FPS game similar to Unreal 1?

R: 33 / I: 6 / P: 1

Battle for Wesnoth

What does /lv/ think of Battle for Wesnoth?

I'm actually astounded that I have never heard of this game until now. This is easily going to the top of my libre vidya recommendation list now.

It reminds me of Fire Emblem with a hex grid but it actually addresses a lot of the things I've never liked about that series.

R: 16 / I: 0 / P: 1

Libre doom

I'm trying to find a libre port of the doom engine, but I can't.

It seems that they're all licensed under the Doom Source License which is incimpatible with GPL and is considered nonfree:
http://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_Source_License

Anyone have any alternatives?

FLOSS STALKER Clone?

Does anything similar to STALKER, at least in spirit or theme exist as a libre vidya? It's just about the only game that doesn't have a libre clone outside from DOTA that I like.

I actually don't expect an answer, sort of just shitposting to keep the board alive.

minetest

How about we play some minetest together?

What is it?

Minetest is a lot like classic Minecraft. No creeps or redstone, but still loads of fun.

I've got a simple server up, at minetest.axfive.net, port 30000 (the default port)

Get the game here, and jump in on the fun:
http://www.minetest.net/download

We're running 0.4.12 right now.

Log in with any username and use any password. Once you use a password, you need to use it the next time you log in.

Anyone here play freeciv? The game claims that I can edit the files, but I don't know how. I open a flag up on GIMP and edit it to test it out and it won't let me overwrite the file. I open up the settings of a nation and it says that I do not have permission to edit it.

Anyone know how this is supposed to work?

R: 3 / I: 0 / P: 1

Server

OK guys, I recently got some money and bought a server.

I am working on the minetest server now.

Any other games I should host for us? Remember the servers need to be headless.

I don't why I've been hooking on this game lately. Maybe because of all the happening hype lately on /pol/, I'm into some rts mood in all of the sudden.

Hey /lv/, I've just made the jump to fully free software. Thing is, I've got quite the extensive Steam library.

Now, I am part of the libre movement for the ethics, so I want to know:

Is the most Stallman-y thing to do to crack the DRM off the Steam games? Is that even feasible?

I suppose I could pirate the games, but I'd feel more comfortable cracking them, you know? I feel like having a libre system shouldn't necessitate breaking the law, there are other ways to get around what big coporations want you to do without making yourself succeptable to incrimination.

Thanks, guys.

I never used this service, so I'm curious. It seems to have a GPL'ed client application? https://github.com/desura/desura-app So it's alright to use this for purchasing libre games? It seems to be owned by a company which calls itself "Bad Juju Games" since only a few months now, are these guys alright?

And then next question: What are some libre vidya that I can get on Desura? Is there any way to easily see the license when browsing games or sort for license?

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Mesa-Now-OpenGL-4.0

So Mesa now supports OpenGL 4.0. This is awesome news for us, because those of use that refuse to use binary only drivers will now have access to modern graphics (or will soon for some). It's really amazing to see how far Mesa has come in the last few years, considering not too long ago it didn't even have OpenGL 3.x support.

However, this doesn't necessarily mean a bunch of libre games will actually use OGL 4.0 (if they even needed it in the first place). At least the option is there, however.

C-evo

So I thought this deserved a little more attention.

It's not GPL as was stated. I don't know where that idea came from.

https://gitlab.com/vn971/cevo/blob/experimental/LICENSE.txt

This is the first game posted here (I think) under "public domain" which isn't technically libre but does lie on our side of the fence. I honestly don't know enough about public domain law so if anyone wants to chime in, please do.

It's also the first compliant? game which is windows only, which sucks. I don't see any mention of porting efforts but there are efforts made for wine compatibility.

http://www.c-evo.org/bb/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=119

Also, what language is this written in? I have seen mentions of C#, in which case couldn't we get it running under mono fairly easily? Flights of fancy perhaps.

What do you think?

SS13 Standalone

Space station 13 standalone went GPL last month.

http://spacestation13.com/2015/01/open-sourced-ss13/#comments

"Hey guys, here’s an update for you in regards to SS13 Standalone.

After a period of putting this project on hold, We’ve made the decision to release the source code, meaning the standalone is now a fully open-sourced project. Here’s a few things you should know:
WHY?

Unfortunately, we were unable to dedicate enough time to work on this project full time.

During development, many of our lives were changed via real world factors. Starting families, babies, jobs etc. While progress was impressively fast at first, all of these things ultimately contributed to us running into difficulties with continuing the project.

We made a promise to libre the project if we ever decided to stop development. While this was a heated internal debate, the decision was ultimately to call it and go ahead.

Releasing what we have as an libred project will hopefully inspire the SS13 Community, and give them a chance to work on the project in our stead. We’ve already seen a lot of interest and discussion among the larger community, spanning every branch of the game. We hope that this will lead to some form of collaboration."

Need QuakeC help: can't get decals/bulletholes to work with spawned in BSP entities.

I spawn a bsp model in game. Though when you shoot it there are particle effects, there are no bullet holes/decals.

I can't figure out how to make them stick to it. I look in the darkplaces source to no avail, the quakec source, and google.

No mention of this.

self.movetype = MOVETYPE_PUSH;

how do I get decals/bulletholes to go on it, if possible? Is there a flag? The non-entity 0 movers in the map get bullet holes…

I notice entity 0 gets bullet holes, and other entities (movers, doors in the map) also get bullet

holes and decals. They aren't entity 0 but are part of the map.

Engine: darkplaces.

R: 22 / I: 8 / P: 5
I think one of the best libre games out there right now is OpenXcom. Granted, it's not an wholly original game, and it does not provide any artwork. It just fixes a shit-load of bugs the original had, and adds a lot features as well (turn save scumming on/off, you can see the radar lines, etc.). The adjustments make the game much more pleasant. Now you can use the blaster launcher without worrying if the game is about to shit the bed or not.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory | wolfet etlegacy

"There are still (human) populated servers (at right times of the day)!" Edition

Originally released as freeware, later got open-sourced (GPLv3) like most id games of the time.

Team based, objective oriented, WW2 themed FPS.
Uses further developed idTech3 (quake3) engine so all the movement mechanics are there. Trickjumping and defrag exists.

If you run original game you might encounter some problems (especially sound on Linux) so it's recommended that you use a source port like etlegacy.
Etlegacy fixes a lot of problems and adds more options while maintaining complete 2.60 compatibility except PunkBuster[1] and ETPro(other mods to substitute?).
Download here[2]: http://etlegacy.com/
The way I installed it on Linux is I simply extracted downloaded etlegacy binaries over original 2.60 ET folder[3].
If you use Arch Linux, AUR version works too.
Readme and AUR page will give you an idea of dependencies to install.
64bit version is incompatible with 32bit. Since original game is only 32bit, use that, else, you will be way lonelier.

[1] PunkBuster ended support and doesn't do shit in terms of cheat prevention these days, some popular mods like Silent and NitMod incorporate better anti-cheat anyway, not to mention cheating is not a big problem really.
[2] If you go to wiki's download page there is a frigin' AROS(amiga port?) build there.

Torus trooper is a tempest clone, basically you can move your spaceship between multiple lanes and shoot at enemies moving towards you (see video). Other tempest clones are typhoon 2001 and Arashi for Mac OS.

The faster the better. Preferably in 3D and minimalist graphics.

corewars / pmars

I made a thread about it on /tech/ but it seems it's too techy to compete with browser wars and NSA.

>What is corewars?

Basically you write programs in Redcode, which is RISC assembly with stuff like

multithreading and relative addressing. Your warrior (code) is then loaded into

the core (VM, e.g. pmars) and has to compete with another warrior to make it

terminate itself (you usually do this by modifying their code, jump addresses

etc). You warrior fights against multiple other warriors to eventually be rated

and get a rank on the hill (if it's good enough) to push another off. Get the

first rank to become king of the hill until you're pushed off.

>Nice, how can I get started?

Learn redcode, there's the '88 standard and the '94 draft with some cool

features which is the de-facto standard. It's reference implementation is

pmars. Here's a beginners guide to '94: http://vyznev.net/corewar/guide.html

Here's a reference: http://www.koth.org/info/pmars-redcode-94.txt For some

advanced reading try http://www.infionline.net/~wtnewton/corewar/chapter1.html

and http://www.infionline.net/~wtnewton/corewar/chapter2.html or

http://www.corewars.org/docs/tips.html You can test your warriors in pmars

>pMARS

pMARS is the reference implementation of the '94 draft, you can get it on http://www.koth.org/pmars/ It's libre and comes for all major operating systems, most have it in their package manager, or you can compile the source yourself. You can use it to have warriors fight each other (usually you do multiple battles with randomized starting positions in the core). If you call it with the -k option it compiles your warriors into koth format (which you need to send a warrior to a hill). It also features the cbd debugger, you can either enter it during a battle or by supplying the -e option.

>cbd

use "help" to get a list of commands. "step" executes a single command and outputs the next command. Supply it with an integer to execute more than one command (e.g. "step 3" does three commands). "list" allows you to look at core addresses, "list 5" looks at the 5th command. You can also supply ranges like "list 0,100" to list a range of addresses. It also supports relative addressing (remember, all addresses are relative). Say you want to check what's at address two:

(cdb) list 2

(i.e. we subtract 102 from 2 and end up in 8000+2-102=7900, which is empty)

You can also set traces with "trace". Use something like "trace 5" to put a trace on 5, then issue "go" to have pMARS run until just before the next execution of the command at address 5.

Gish

Anyone here enjoyed Gish?
http://www.chroniclogic.com/gish.htm

"Gish isn't your average hero; in fact he's not your average anything. You see, Gish is a ball of tar. A Sunday stroll with his lady friend Brea goes awry when a shadowy figure emerges from an open manhole and pulls Brea into the ground below. Following Brea's calls for help, Gish suddenly finds himself in the subterranean sewers of Dross, a long forgotten city filled with twisting corridors, evil traps and some of the most demented creatures imaginable."

I enjoyed it for a while but fuck it got so damn boring. I never completed it. Anyone here even played it past the third level? Sequel looks cool though.

Aquaria

http://www.bit-blot.com/aquaria/

"Naija has the gift of the Verse. By singing songs, she can weave this force to change the waters around her. With each song Naija learns comes new abilities. With powerful songs, Naija is able to change form, giving players many options as to how to play the game.

And with Aquaria's intuitive mouse-only control system, it's as easy to make Naija swim gracefully through the waters as it is to have her sing, cast spells, and engage in combat with the numerous dangerous creatures that inhabit Aquaria's waters."

Gameplay is so so, very much reminds me of ecco for a number of reasons. Very good game though, took me a little while to get into it at first but overall one of the few games I have really enjoyed. I know it looks like shit but it's worth a play.

>On the other hand the new track which takes place in an island with a big airport has 8 models of Sara (the white woman in the poster) in a bikini swim suit, even in the hall of the airport. There are something like 2 Suzanne, 4 GNU (who is still wearing is T shirt) and 4 "aztec" women also featured from the other new track. In my opinion it's privileging a male gaze position.

Emulators

Can we have an emulator thread?

I was wondering which libre emulators any of you use/would recommend.

Also where is the line drawn on emulators? Virtualbox is a GPL x86 emulator which can run windows games with a pass through. Is that too far? If people do use emulators, which emulators do you think are acceptable and why?

To play devils advocate you didn't need freedom on an arcade machine because it serves one function, it was built to play a game and that's it. Essentially making the software, soft circuitry, like in modern microwave ovens or coffee makers. This same logic can be applied to emulators of even modern console games such as Dolphin, as the games are essentially drop in soft circuitry for the emulator which serves one function, to play the games.

Now obviously the major flaw here is that we don't have access to the source code for these games. In an extreme but plausible situation a proprietary console game released today could even escape its' emulated environment. This has been observed with windows malware which can recognise a virtual environment and infect the host cross platform.

Hey, I am looking for a 2d engine, made with C++, that allows scripting, libre and that includes a level editor. Do you know or recommend anything?

R: 11 / I: 0 / P: 6

Hey guys, ive recently tried to switch to linux full time because windows is shit.

I work in IT and im very computer literate, but ive never used linux my entire life, so its quite different and a learning experience for sure.

That being said, ive got linux mint installed and configured properly (I think), and WINE working relatively well.

Im having a really weird issue that I cant find SHIT for on google (been looking for days)..

Whenever I play a game, ANY game, whether its a native linux game (like witcher 2) or something via WINE, im getting weird inconsistant frame rates. It only happens with 3D games, 2d games like shadowrun dragonfall work perfectly fine.

My specs:

AMD FX-8350 CPU

Nvidia 770 gtx GPU

8gb DDR3 RAM

SSD for OS, regular HDD for data/wine

Using the proprietary nvidia drivers that came with/loaded automatically in Linux Mint.

Whenever I play a game, the FPS is pretty stable, but about every 10 seconds or so, it freezes, for a good 2-3 seconds. I can still hear the game running in the background, and I can still control the game, but the graphics completely freeze for several seconds. In the witcher 2, I can hear stuff hitting me, or hear myself rolling when it freezes, but then suddenly it starts working normally again for another 10-15 seconds.

I cant figjure out how to fix this shit to save my life, and its driving me insane. Its really the only thing stopping me from running linux full time.

Does this seem like an issue with graphics drivers or something else? Some kind of prereq issue or something? Again, im SUPER new to linux and I literally dont know shit so try to spoonfeed/babyfy your answers as much as possible.

Thanks a ton guys, I love you all.

"The idea is based on the Padman comic strip for the magazine PlayStation Games created by the professional cartoon artist Andreas 'ENTE' (German for "Duck") Endres, who is also the man who made many of the maps included with the game in 1998.
World of Padman supports bots with a variety of skill levels in both online and offline play for all of the game types included. A single-player campaign has not yet been implemented however bots allow off-line multiplayer games. Players can also record audio and video as they play. The game fully supports modifications, and custom maps can be created.
Besides widespread game types like Tournament, Free For All and Team Deathmatch, World of Padman features three uncommon game types: Spray Your Color (spray a logo on the walls in the sprayroom), Big Balloon (similar to Unreal Tournament’s Domination), Last Pad Standing, and the recently added Capture the Flag."

The one and only update

Well guys, it's been a good few days. We shot up to 29 unique posters. Yes I have been checking, I am that sad. I promised myself I would make this thread when we hit page 2.

I decided to change the css theme because this blue default is fugly. Thanks to /g for pointing me towards the one they use:
https://github.com/7185/8chan-tomorrow
If you want adjustments made or want to recommend a different default theme then let me know.

If you fancy being a mod then send me an e-mail. There will be no bans, NO BANS, made by mods. If you are banned, e-mail me. All posts are backed up at 8archive.moe, so nothing deleted is lost forever, however we don't appear on there just yet. The "job" will involve coming back every once in a while to check we are not getting flooded. And also prune posts that break the only rule, no proprietary games. Inane comments are permitted, unless way way off topic. This is posted here for users as much as it is for future mods.

Lastly, board shilling. I have shilled pretty hard to give the community a good start. Starting threads on boards for discussion about how free software licences can apply to the video game industry and linking back to /lv. Seemed pretty harmless to me but the owner of /tech had this to say: "If I catch you advertising your board again, I won't be so lenient." Regardless of how much I enjoyed that conversation I am going to give the shilling a rest to see how low our poster count drops to. However please continue to recommend /lv as much as you like, I have not given up.

Play games and love life.

Rigs of Rods

Caveat lector: OP video is not the game. See second post.

I've been checking out this simulator called Rigs of Rods. Basically a vehicle simulator with soft-body physics. It has pretty nice physics, deformation, destruction for the vehicles. Buses, cars, trucks, trains, airplanes even.

It uses the OGRE graphics engine (MIT License). One of the better free projects I've seen using that. I know some commercial projects have used OGRE.

Video shows it off, but you need to install mods (drop some .zip files in a directory) to get all the shit, much is community made. Starting out, expect to have to start the vehicle, then expect to get stuck a bunch on the terrain. It's not easy to drive, not an arcade game. Not *that* hard though you get used to it.

It think it's neat hope people keep adding to it.

I'm running it on Arch, added a repo I found on the official website, installed it from there. Works well on my old desktop, but I do have a modern-ish graphics card. Seems to max my dual-core CPU though.

Tales of Maj'Eyal

libre and available on steam (if you are lazy like me). runs great on linux.

ToME is a semi-modern adaptation of the classic roguelike. It enjoys a lot of good features from older roguelikes (challenging gameplay, rich lore, and deep character building) while adding many modern touches (fully customizable UI/keyboard/mouse, 2D graphics with openGL effects, varying difficulties and permadeath settings). The end result is a game with a steep learning curve but excellent replay value.

Exploration is done on a pre-defined world map with a few variable dungeons (some dungeons do not appear on a given playthrough) and most dungeons are randomly generated aside from exits/entrances. enemies and loot in a dungeon are also highly variable. some zones have 'alternate' layouts which increase difficulty.

combat is turn-based and highly tactical. good management of abilities and resources is critical to survival and often decides the outcome of a fight. in the numerous classes available, players can build characters that excel in melee, ranged, magic, psionic, and other forms of combat. the number of effective character builds is difficult to even estimate.

anyone who enjoys role-playing or fantasy games owes it to themselves to try this game out. while it is a bit difficult to get used to (and it will punish the unwary ruthlessly) it rewards the persistent with rich gameplay.

Pretty sure they use a fork of ren-py.

See full license here:

Their other games are full proprietary as far as I can tell. I will update the link provided to reflect that.

Let me know you read this so I can keep the thread clean.

>>214

read it, thanks. oh man, that's some kind of regular CC license, it doesn't even say which one exactly and is hella long. they're not inteded for source code licensing but w/e, I guess it's alright to call it libre because CC is in the same spirit as Free Software.

>>217

I am being pretty dense here but why in the ever loving fuck would he choose that as his license?

He contributes code back to renpy and renpy even lists it on their front page: http://www.renpy.org/

But renpy is MIT and LGPL: http://www.renpy.org/doc/html/license.html

Is he using it as some sort of sub-license? Is this a mistake? Is he actually referring to assets?

His other games appear to use ren-py also, so not just the one. I was just confused by the repo. I will revert the link back to the page.

>>219

lol, the only way to get sunrider academy is steam only. Sorry to be anal but I'm just not going to suggest people install proprietary software just to get the assets.
