>Pikka - one of the long-standing artists around OpenTTD, who has released nummerous NewGRF - considers working full-time for 9 months on a graphics project for OpenTTD. To make this possible he has started a kick starter to raise funds for his life expenses.

The plane on the left looks better though. The right one looks like something out of a phone game.

 No.1017

Yeah… Read about this on the main page update recently. I vastly prefer the original 8bpp style graphics of things myself. There's something about that heavy attention to detail when drawing sprites at a resolution that low that I think results in something more aesthetically pleasing.

The other thing is that the older graphics require less system resources–and when you're playing really huge maps making really huge networks in OpenTTD this actually does matter.

 No.1018

I am extremely displeased with the obsession with graphics pushing that has been going on in the OpenTTD community in general lately. While I don't have any issue with people wanting to display the game in whatever hideous 3D models they'd like to on their own machines, it does become a problem when a lot of these clueless newGRF authors have been converting to 32bpp but giving no thought to the ridiculously ballooning download sizes these create. It wouldn't be a problem if they would get a system in place to optionally allow people to download only the the 8bpp version of a newGRF. Sadly, playing with some of the newGRFs I love now involves forcing people to download 300 fucking megabytes when they join a server and that's just not something you want to make people do.

i agree with >>1016, please no cartoon/farmville graphics in oldschool games. or anywhere.

i think the plane needs a realistic shape (if it doesn't have that already) and colors need more saturation but idk.

They don't have a choice to keep 'improving' graphics unless they want their project to die out from lack of new members. When 9/10 of the people that visit their site or see screenshots dismiss it out of hand because it looks old they have an issue. As the newer generation of gamers grow up and have no real attachment to older style of graphics this problem is going to get worse.

This game and the simple hand drawn sprites was the reason why I wanted to buy a 4k screen. To me that's the future of gaming that I envisioned when I was younger and I'm glad that it's the FLOSS world that's doing it properly allowing me to participate in it. The style of these newer graphics I don't like at all but I understand why it's important for the future of the project, it's no different than them creating an Android port with touch screen controls.

They should make a 3d interpreter for the game, like streets of sim city

(And yes I know how much time it takes to make the models of all the buildings with interiors, I've been doing something similar for Xonotic for some years now)

Agreed. The 256-color graphics are part of the appeal of the game. 32bpp graphics sit right at the mark of the uncanny valley.

OpenTTD didn't become popular in the last ten years because of the graphics when it's always been completely out-of-date graphically, and it certainly won't die because of them either.

So guys I'm thinking of hosting an OpenTTD server very soon again. Gonna post it on /v/ too but is anyone here interested in playing together?

1st looks like a real plane (727), 2nd looks like a toy. Too unrealistic, I don't like it.
