So I thought this deserved a little more attention.

It's not GPL as was stated. I don't know where that idea came from.

https://gitlab.com/vn971/cevo/blob/experimental/LICENSE.txt

This is the first game posted here (I think) under "public domain" which isn't technically libre but does lie on our side of the fence. I honestly don't know enough about public domain law so if anyone wants to chime in, please do.

It's also the first compliant? game which is windows only, which sucks. I don't see any mention of porting efforts but there are efforts made for wine compatibility.

Also, what language is this written in? I have seen mentions of C#, in which case couldn't we get it running under mono fairly easily? Flights of fancy perhaps.

What do you think?

 No.1022

Sorry, it's only in part C#. The rest is delphi, never encountered a project that used it before now.

Damn, looked at an older branch and it is GPLv3 re-licensed.

Apologies to the original poster, I was quick to judge.

Fuck it, maybe just delete this thread.

Well I'm glad that you made this thread, I was wondering why my post in the other thread was edited.

Not libre, but Hellsinker was written in Delphi.

Public domain is more libre than GPL. It's not copyleft, if that's what you mean. You can take public domain code, slap your name on it, and license it under GPL if you want to.

Ah, thank you. I have been reading about potential residual rights issues. Definitely an interesting area. I wonder where it might leave current code in the future like the unreal engine?

>>1024

At first I merged them to tidy up, then I couldn't find the gpl reference and so it went.

With regard to the mention of a port, I could only see about the launcher running with gtk. I did see the developer mention it would be nice to convert the project to something cross platform but I don't think it's happening. Am I wrong?

Thanks for posting btw.

 No.1220

Public domain code allows you to do whatever you want with it, so that's libre.

But it is possible to put the binaries in the public domain, without releasing the source code, so a program can be in the public domain without being libre.

And there are jurisdictions that don't allow people to manually put works in the public domain, so it's better to use something like CC0 instead, which has an ultra-permissive fallback license.

 No.1293

I don't see no c# code in there, what i do see are delphi files and the readme implies that src/cevo.dpr is a sort of delphi makefile… They also seem to be making version to compile with an ide named lazerus mentioned somewhere in the readme as well.

>>1220 is correct about some countries not allowing authors to put stuff in public domain. As a result, various bits of the code could legally be defaulted to 'all rights reserved', therefore making the entire project legally nonfree.

It seems the GPL License >>1023 links to applies to the (adaptions to the) lazerus changes mentioned above which would be very curious as certain recent commits are in both trees and I don't think they actually won't port back 'lazerus' changes to the original if something was fixed there first.
