From what I can find SS1 is based on the Darkplaces engine as is GPL.

SS2 on the other hand, I have seen on their tumblr (oh god) they used the id tech 4 GPL.

Can anyone help me pin down the license of the second game (SS2)?

I was pretty tired last night, which should go part way to explain why I didn't realise something so simple. They haven't released a license yet because they haven't released any code yet.

Which is strange because they state an alpha for 2013. Did the project die?

Answered my own question. The project is still going.
The video is from two weeks ago.

SS1 looks interesting but I don't care for a demo and don't want to use Steam or Desura

Steam is just a stretch goal. I hope they distribute via their website, else this thing is dead to me.

Just a heads up, I encountered a weird error after compiling from source.

The game requires a launch from the full path, as in /path/to/game/darkplaces-sdl

If your file manager works in this preferred way you can just click the executable.

I think it might also need to be in the current directory. The boot splash didn't show otherwise Used the following:

#!/bin/bash
cd "$( dirname "${BASH_SOURCE[0]}" )"
/usr/local/games/SteelStorm1/steelstorm
exit 0
