I'm trying to find a libre port of the doom engine, but I can't.

It seems that they're all licensed under the Doom Source License which is incimpatible with GPL and is considered nonfree:
http://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_Source_License

Anyone have any alternatives?

 No.333

>The source code was originally released under a proprietary license that prohibited commercial use and did not require programmers to provide the source code for the modifications they released in executable form, but later in 1999 it was re-released under the GNU General Public License after requests from the community.

http://vavoom-engine.com/

It's the best one and it's GPL.

I saw that, but I also saw:
>Confusingly, source ports which use the DSL are not libre, even if the source code is still available; this is because the DSL does not meet the requirements for what is considered "open" under the libre Definition. Similarly, DSL source ports are also non-Free Software.

They don't all use the DSL. Such as >>334 (Vavoom) and also:

Up and coming, looks promising.

Boring as fuck.

Do the wads count as free, or do I need to download the freedoom ones?

 No.338

>>337
Well that has been heavily debated for many years and you can get a range of answers. The problem is there are degrees of freedom and from many different stand points. Stallman has essentially said the freedom of the users is most important and all the user needs is the code to have freedom over what they run. When you get to redistribution it gets tricky.
As far as yours and my freedom is concerned it doesn't matter. I use the proprietary WADs.

what's the ideal engine for someone who wants modern screen resolutions (like widescreen) but thinks coloured dynamic lights, open gl linear filtering, bloom and vertical aiming is cancer?

I believe that would be the "boring as fuck" option >>336

Yeah, that's what I mean. They're just using the vanilla renderer and doing linear scaling on it, instead of doing a sharp native render.

something like fitzquake/quakespasm for quake is what I'm after.

 No.364

I use chocolate doom, shame most wads people make these days dont work with it.

>I am hinting at you sending me doom wads

 No.432

the wads(doom.wad, doomu.wad, doom2.wad, the team TNT iwads and the wads for the full versions of heretic, hexen and strife) are considered proprietary assets and thus are non free. iirc, the hacx wad can be legally redistributed nowadays, but I don't remember if its explicitly libre.
tl;dr redistributing id's wads is piracy.

the freedoom project has released two wads that serve as 1:1 asset replacements for ultimate doom and doom2, and are specifically intended to allow running doom mods with a libre iwad. these can be redistributed, and since most mods are based on doom2 assets, freedom's doom2 asset replacer should work in most situations.

>>350
there's a fork of chocolatedoom called crispy doom that allows for high resolution (real hires, not that scaling shit like in normal choco doom). it also allows for vertical aiming, but that can be disabled. otherwise, its basically chocolate doom.

Back to Saturn X

i know this thread is ancient and all the posts are months old but i'd like to make somethings clear, proprietary assets are a different issue than proprietary software.

also there are GPL-compliant variants of GZDoom available, like GLOOME and GZDoom-GPL

http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=48994

http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=49451

also keep in mind buying Doom nowadays gives all the money to Bethesda and nobody who actually made the game.

WTF, why have I not heard of these before? Thank you!

Now I can play the cool wads, like pol.wad and the xxx mod.

 No.1819

Zandronum is a fork of skulltag licensed under a modified sleepycat license. It's very compatible with zdoom and assuming a mod doesn't require the latest version, it should work with zandronum.
