Thought it might be cool to look at some games with cyber elements.

There appear to be a bunch of projects for system shock. Has anyone tried any of them? Any success?

This has all types of settings in it, including cyberpunk type maps and weapons, but also old style weapons:

Release 52:
New weapons: English Longbow, Cudgel (modeled in blender this week)

New Mutator options: remove weapons from map on start.
Replace weapons on map with: spikes, fire, pillar of flame, jumppads, bouncer, baloon, tanktraps, buildings, foliage.

You can also light up your crossbow bolt or longbow arrow if near a burning item (something on fire or fire particles) by pressing F+R keys (use and reload keys).

Also you can move your gun to the center by pressing the Semicolon (;) key next to L. Thus you can more easily shoot out of arrow slits in Castles etc (also works with L: turn gun to the side)

Enjoy!

I don't know about the others, but system shock 1&2 aren't libre.
system shock's assets are in intellectual property hell (the property is owned by an insurance company iirc)

system shock 1 doesn't have a source distribution; all of its mods are done by binary hacking iirc.

system shock 2 has a source release, but it wasn't released legally. some French fag bought a Dreamcast Dev kit and found the dark engine source buried inside of it and published his findings anonymously without the consent of the creator.

they both exist in a very grey legal area: everything about them is technically illegal, but no one party has stepped forward to do anything about it out of sheer apathy.

Can we have a policy about whether a vidya is 100% libre on here?

Well that is a tough subject. The license situation surrounding artwork and writings often sparks heated debate about what qualifies something as "100% libre."

In this instance however, it appears it could be more cut and dry, which is what I assume you are referring to. At first glance I assumed it was a full re-write such as with OpenRA. However I just noticed this: "All source code except the code in src/swars.S is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or any later version. src/swars.S is a modified disassembled version of the original game's main.exe by Bullfrog."

It's an impressive project but definitely doesn't belong here. Thanks for pointing it out.

Also as a side note, I have been a volunteer and Admin on many tech boards over the years and have seen how strict rules and guide lines can lead to over zealous modding, high veteran user anal retention and eventual stagnation. I prefer to take a more relaxed but implied approach and adapt to what the users want. It may appear lazy but in this instance it meant you were able to guide my actions rather than have me quietly delete content in the background.

In any case I will remove the link in the OP but leave the one in your post for relevance of discussion. Thanks again for pointing it out. Apologies to anyone who wasted their time on this.

The question of copyrighted content is very interesting. As always Stallman has something to say on the subject, if you haven't seen this or read his paper on it it's highly worth a watch.

I understand. If you like I can put some sort of indicator on threads whether the game is commercial or gratis?

I would put a "100% libre", meaning assets included, on there for you but then it gets tricky by whos' definition we make that decision. For example the game Astromenace is GPLv3 code and CC-SA-v3 assets. http://sourceforge.net/p/openastromenace/code/HEAD/tree/License.txt which seems pretty straight forward. But then we start to get into some of the more technical licensing issues like the fonts licenses and the trouble with the licensing of some of the assets by one contributor and suddenly whether this games qualifies as "100% libre" comes into question. Because of this Debian considers this package "non-free" https://packages.debian.org/jessie/astromenace-data-src now this is definitely free by my definition but it depends on your use case and for a distributor such as Debian, if it's not "100% libre" then it falls into the "non-free" category and the code falls into "contrib" as a result. I know the license for myself and just accept having a "non-free" and a "contrib" package installed on my system, but then again I am just a user and the way we view the licensing is different to each use case.

I have made a minor amendment to the rules stating all code must be of a libre license, just to be clear. If you are a developer I highly suggest you read through licenses carefully despite the recommendations of others. If you want me to start putting indicators, just let me know.

I don't know, as long as developers are confident in releasing a whole game with source, without worries of copyright litigation then I consider it libre. Though going through pygame examples it seems the big problem with libre games is they're half finished or they need a gazillion libraries just to play them.
