How about we play some minetest together?
What is it?Minetest is a lot like classic Minecraft. No creeps or redstone, but still loads of fun.
I've got a simple server up, at minetest.axfive.net, port 30000 (the default port)
Get the game here, and jump in on the fun:
http://www.minetest.net/downloadWe're running 0.4.12 right now.
Log in with any username and use any password. Once you use a password, you need to use it the next time you log in.

Might need more than that.
There was a thread on the minetest forum about minimum hardware requirements, some people got it running on some really low specs.
I want to say the minimum would be 1gb but I may be wrong in that even. Maybe give it it a shot and see if it does poorly?

Seems to work decently with 512mb ram, with two people on it, anyway. Should add some mods before I declare it stable enough to use, though.

At best, the creeps are but a mere annoyance.
Face it, Minecraft could have done well without the mobs, because what makes the game fun is building stuff, not killing zombies.

Thought this might be worth mentioning:
http://www.voxelands.com/about.html
It's a fork of an older version of minetest, with backported patches and bug fixes, with an actual game built around it.
Licensed under GPL.
The screenshots are few and don't show off what's in it too well, but it might be worth checking out.

Fun = Frustration-Boredom balance.
No mobs means much less danger and resource scarcity, do you really want to do the mind-numbing task of excavating underground mines with no challenge besides falling damages? You might as well always have infinite inventory on.

A good place to start is cloning minecraft. For the most part it is well made gameplay and mechanics wise. We could try to be intelligent about expanding gameplay without going full autist.

>>1036
>clone minecraft
No. Just no. Minecraft is already far more boring than Infiniminer was and it's basically a clone. We need to avoid that steaming pile.
Minetest gameplay/"mechanics" is already considerably better with current mods and it's only 0.4. By 1.0 vanilla Minetest should easily surpass Minecraft, because Minecraft is shit.

>far more boring than Infiniminer
Tends to happen when you take the action out of an action game and make it creative

No.1042
>>1040
Well I would say "completely different" is just as inaccurate as calling it a clone. How about we say they coincide in some of the same categories because Minecraft was conceptualised using infiniminer as a starting point.

Some questions about minetest.
Why is the lighting engine so awful?
During the night cycle, everything is pitch black 1 meter in front of your face unless you have a million torches to light up everything.
Light also seems to exist as a node, which I noticed some mod that added a digging hammer with a 3x3 AOE was capable of breaking the light source nodes, allowing the player to pick them up and have non-updating lights to place around. How does this differ from how lighting is handled in minecraft?
Why is there such a huge delay between syncing the player inventory and crafting from a node?
Would too many nodes using custom meshes cause a lot of strain when rendering?
Is the terrain in the FOV only rendered, or does it try to render everything that isn't visible (like minecraft)?
No.1194
>>1086
Sometimes you can spot lighting errors in world represented by large shadow cast by nothing. You can fix those with WorldEdit by replacing air with air. Also minetest kills me with that damn lag with changing blocks.

What you are talking about is a non problem, most likely learned from the microsoft anti linux propaganda. The idea is people form different projects and progress more slowly than as a whole, but free software source code is shared, unlike proprietary, so all projects are mostly compatible and rely upon each other for code. Consolidating all programmes under one project and denying them a fork by license only serves the leaders of that project, not even the project itself.
