Hey guys, ive recently tried to switch to linux full time because windows is shit.

I work in IT and im very computer literate, but ive never used linux my entire life, so its quite different and a learning experience for sure.

That being said, ive got linux mint installed and configured properly (I think), and WINE working relatively well.

Im having a really weird issue that I cant find SHIT for on google (been looking for days)..

Whenever I play a game, ANY game, whether its a native linux game (like witcher 2) or something via WINE, im getting weird inconsistant frame rates. It only happens with 3D games, 2d games like shadowrun dragonfall work perfectly fine.

My specs:

AMD FX-8350 CPU

Nvidia 770 gtx GPU

8gb DDR3 RAM

SSD for OS, regular HDD for data/wine

Using the proprietary nvidia drivers that came with/loaded automatically in Linux Mint.

Whenever I play a game, the FPS is pretty stable, but about every 10 seconds or so, it freezes, for a good 2-3 seconds. I can still hear the game running in the background, and I can still control the game, but the graphics completely freeze for several seconds. In the witcher 2, I can hear stuff hitting me, or hear myself rolling when it freezes, but then suddenly it starts working normally again for another 10-15 seconds.

I cant figjure out how to fix this shit to save my life, and its driving me insane. Its really the only thing stopping me from running linux full time.

Does this seem like an issue with graphics drivers or something else? Some kind of prereq issue or something? Again, im SUPER new to linux and I literally dont know shit so try to spoonfeed/babyfy your answers as much as possible.

Thanks a ton guys, I love you all.

It's a simple driver problem.

First you need to overload your original drivers with the overload toolset and create a new driver called NewDriver.sh and place it in your home/drivers folder(if its not there then create it) then open up your terminal and de-scale the folder for safe measure and then go to drivers-linux.info and watch a tutorial on how to put a driver in a sh file and you're done.

Oh I forgot to mention to check the resonance in root to make sure you can use the overload toolset.

dude you just fucking info raped my noob brain.

Is the overload toolset a built in linux utility or something I need to download? Can I get it from the repo?

by overload my original drivers, do you mean the ones that came with the linux mint install? Or drivers I need to pull from the web somewhere?

what is de-scaling a folder? Is that a command I run in terminal?

Thanks for your help, im just way dumber than your instructions are written for

Ok so ive been doing some searches and I cant find anything about the overload toolset. Can you perhaps expand on what that is and how to use it? Or at least a link or something to some resources that discuss it?

kuk, that was really good.

It's your compositor, most likely. No idea why modern distros don't disable it when 3d programs are running. It's an age old issue, I have had to disable the compositor every time before I play a game since I made the switch back when Unreal was ported to GNU/Linux. In fact I recently forgot when playing Doom3 and shat a brick thinking my graphics card was broken. If it's not the compositor it's possibly an xorg configuration issue, but I don't use nVidia so don't know what could help you. Heads up, xorg recently stopped using a config file and auto generate settings but you can still manually set certain stuff via the xorg.config.

I have been thinking of using one of the lv "pages" for a big newbie howto. Good idea?

If you can't solve this, I will be on IRC

Ill be home from work in a few hours and ill use google to try to figure out how to disable the compositor.

I honestly would LOVE a how-to. Theres so much that I feel like im missing. Like, when I torrent a game and im left with an archive, figuring out how to unzip the archive, figure out what program I need to use to launch the game (java, python etc)and what the magic word is in the terminal to launch it, what dependencies need to be installed for the game run, how to install them etc… I feel like theres probably some dumb easy way to do all this crap im totally over looking or cant find resources for.

OK, I made you a guide. It's shit.

Enjoy.

I fixed the bit about multi-user, will add some user friendly text later.

And it's done. I made it as user friendly as possible. Apologies, I am not a writer.

I never saw OP in IRC. Hope he got his shit fixed.
