Well, yes, watch it in production order. Strictly speaking, DYRL is unnecessary, since it's a retelling of the original series, but it's still worth watching on merit.

the Robotech dub has some well-liked performances, but it takes enough liberties with the story that if you're just looking for Macross just go with Macross

there's also a more accurate dub of the series by ADV but it makes the mistake of having a middle aged Japanese woman with decent English skills play a teenage Chinese girl with bad English skills. And casting Vic Mangina in anything.
