Looks like the old thread isn't bumping when posted anymore, so I'm gonna make a new thread.https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1Tr8UyF2Xg5Ojqw0sxcO7oIG7IIsJPes3lMO5pHZKu5oREAD THE GUIDEFor those of you just joining us, please read this guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "Plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model." If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.

My HLJ package came in the mail today.
I've only ever built one proper HG and 1 MG of the 1.0 Ez08 and they didn't come out to well due to being straight snap builds and not having many tools.
I want to paint what I can but I know the First Grade RX will be first. I'd prefer a Zaku II to be my first victim of painting I will probably order the Char and Ms06 Zaku II First Grades later and use them as practice projects.
I have paints. But I need to order some claw grips and pipettes
GelgoogGuy was gonna hook me up with some pipettes but I need to contact him when he's online.
I have some sable brushes a can of tamiya white spray a assortment of tamiya paints and a smal ottle of thinner. I need to invest in more thinner if I wish to paint though.
I want to bu some plastic cement for seam lines.
Along side this I ordered the Tamiya Toolset and it should be arrive later this month or early next month.
I also need to find or order a new gundam marker. I think I might just order a set of fine tips later on as I only own a single black fine tip marker and it's been used a fair bit.
My main concern is the F-91 and R35 those too are far more advanced and I'm afraid of breaking the delicate parts.

How hard is it to hand paint with tamiya?
I was told Tamiya is for air brushing :(.
I also don't own a respirator. Would it be safer then to spray can outside for the priming?
I still need something to let my stuff dry. I don't have a drying booth. What do you guys use?
I'm thinking I could use a cardboard box as a ghetto drying booth though.
I've watched Makanoman on youtube, but I don't have as much in terms of utilities.
Is there any decent guide specifically for hand painting gundams? like straight lines and layering for multiple colors.
I must always remember to thin my paints.

So, I've finally finished the MG Sinanju (OVA ver.). And now I've sticker-induced PTSD. Still, one of my favorite builds… extremly fun and good looking… also my first time doing detalis with the gundam markers (painted all the verniers silver on the outside, and metallic blue on the inside)

No.5079
>>5076Try some Hazel legs, they're more GM/Gundam-ish and would probably fit with the overall feddie design. The question is are you kitbashing or are you pla-plating?
No.5080
>>5079I'm from /tg/ so I'm more of a kitbasher. I don't really know pla-plating from adam, but if there's a good guide for it I'll give it a try. This isn't my Arcana Gundam so I'm keen to mess around with it more. Also what about something like messala forearm claws? Or is it really hard to mix and match those kind of parts?
No.5081
>>5080Kitbashing more recent kits together is more feasible thanks to the United Maintenance Plan for HGs that Bandai put in place for Build Fighters and customization. Mix and match for a while if you have the kit to try to see what works. Even then, combining parts from two kits that weren't meant for each other does require the use of glue, paint, and pla-plates on occasion.
It's how I finalized this kitbash between a Gouf Custom and a feddie Hizack.
No.5084
>>5081well, looking it over the Silver Bullet has this weird reverse hip thing- the hip has a socket that the torso plugs into rather than the reverse of normal HGUC's, and this kit is from last year I thought.
Not like it's too bad, I can re-jigger the hip joint itself I think.
with some work.
No.5086
>>5084Oh god my phrasing was incomprehensible. Okay the bottom of the torso peice has a ball-joint, and the hips themselves have the socket.
On most of the kits I've built recently the hips have the ball, or the polycap ball, which connects into a socket in the torso.
No.5093
>>5086The MG Nu Gundam Ver. Ka has something like that. The hip unit is attached with a ball joint to the torso and the legs are connected via rotating pegs on the hip unit.
If you can find a way to use the same hip joints but attach different legs to them then it could solve your problem without resorting to building custom pieces and altering the kits beyond a simple kitbash.

My suggestion for your first MG would be to stay away from anything that transforms and andyting Ver KA. The Exia is also a finicky bitch but that's just because of all the points of articulation.
I recommend the F91. Great articulation, simple build, very little painting needs to be done to make it movie accurate.
No.5116
>>5106Go full Zeon, all the green.
>>5107That thing isn't too ugly.. the upper body is different and the backpack is different but otherwise that mk. V is the spitting image of the Silver bullet. And the colors do really help it out.
That said, oh my fucking god I hate this kit. The instructions are so TERRIBLY laid out that I literally cannot tell which side of some arm pieces I'm supposed to be using, and it has that old shoulder thing where the arm attaches to the torso and the shoulder is just a piece between the two- more like decoration than something practical. The shoulder itself is this boxy lump so you don't even want to skip the pauldrons. That'll be change 2, something different for upper arms. After I find different legs.
No.5117
>>5114>MG F91I dunno, anon. That kit has some pretty varied opinions ranging from "It's perfect!" to "It falls apart too easily/is too loose". It's also got a pretty crucial dry transfer decal that can be an absolute bitch.
I do agree that he should stay away from Ver Ka and transforming kits for now.
>>5113First off, sorry I can't answer your questions about the Ingram. It's in my backlog, but I've heard good things.
Now as far as MGs are concerned: I'm of the mindset that the Gouf-Custom and Kampfer's HGUC kits have fully outdone the MGs.
I firmly believe the Geara Doga is a FANTASTIC kit. Good introduction to MGs, but a bit on the pricier side. Your giftcard wouldn't be enough to cover it.
Zaku II 2.0s are solid.
The Jesta and Tallgeese are pretty much praised universally, and for good reason. Simple, but enthralling builds that improve any display.
If you want to avenge your Turn A, I suggest you do it with the MG. Turn A and the Turn X are both a breath of fresh air. Great kits.
No.5120
>>5117I would recommend the MG Gouf Custom or an MG Jegan as both kits offer a lot of props and unique features yet are relatively simple to build. The Gouf Custom, despite being a 2001 MG with screws in the joints, is a great introduction to MGs. Dealing with screw joints will make the current joints seem easy.
>I do agree that he should stay away from Ver Ka and transforming kits for now.Speaking of Ver Ka's I just finished building my Nu Gundam Ver Ka. and I had minimal issues with it
still have decals and lining to do, BMT comes first though. A few ripped silver psychofame decals here or there. The real problem I have with it is the forearm transformation. The mechanism doesn't want to work properly and the inner elbow armor piece is a very fragile piece. Fragile to the point that one of them shattered in shipping so I was forced to keep the forearms in normal mode after salvaging the piece.
It's a shame too because there's a lot of psychoframe in the forearms.

I'm gonna be picking up my first kits soon (an HGUC Zaku I and an HGUC Zaku II F2), are there any important beginner tips I should know before I get started?
Little things like if there are any weird quirks in the instructions that would give me issues unless I knew about them beforehand, etc.
I'm probably just gonna snap-build for now since I'm NEET and it'd be ages before I could replace anything if I messed something up.
No.5265
>>5262If something is giving you resistance, don't force it. Play around with a stubborn piece during assembly instead of brute forcing it.
You will need to remove nubs for certain pieces to fit together, no two ways about it. 1000 grit sandpaper or a hobby file will do wonders. Don't be afraid of scratching or gouging your first kit, it's going to happen regardless of how steady your hand is.
Unlike their in-universe counterparts, Zakus are relatively straightforward to build. Just follow the diagrams and be careful when assembling.
No.5266

I'm ordering my first MG soon. Wing didn't end up being as good as I remembered as a kid. But I'm reaaaaally tempted for my first to either be the Tallgeese or Sandrock. >>5395My unwarranted thoughts on your picture:
-Waste of action bases. Your kits could be in those poses without them. If you're going to put things on ABs, then you can at least have a bit more showing of movement. They don't need to be "in action", but at least angle feet downward, give the legs a bit of bend, etc. Being on an AB implies they are in the air, but your poses make them look as if they're floating in some invisible hangar bay.
-Is that Gouf swinging the sword or just holding it up like that? Either way, it looks weird.
-That Ez8 is way too decal-heavy for my tastes. Looks gaudy.
-Apply some more coats to that horrible blue sword hilt.
-Buy some sandpaper (1000 grit at least) and remove those nubs. Don't get into the habit of painting over nubs like that.
-Panel lining is a little messy in a few places, but it's overall good work.
-Good taste in Mobile Suits.
Keep it up, anon. I look forward to seeing updates.
>>5387I hate Wing with a passion. I love my MG Tallgeese more than any other MG on my shelf. Not only does it look amazing, but it's engineering is fantastic. I highly recommend it.
>>5396How much experience do you have? MGs aren't really as different when compared to HGs. Yeah, they've got inner frames and more parts, but the same building knowledge applies - properly remove pieces from runners and clean your nubs well, then snap the shit together. I'm sure you'll be fine.

I asked my friends what I should do from a list of mockup images, and they all said the yellow scheme I came up with looked good. So I made it into a construction type. I put light overspray and weathering on it to make it seem beat up and ignored as nothing more than a tool.

Buy some sandpaper and ditch the file for now. Files are good for taking down nubs to sandpaper territory or completely altering a piece. I recommend using 800 grit to get rid of the nub, then progressively go up 200 grit until you're happy with the polish.

If you wanna take it slow, I suggest building an Age-1 Normal. It's the easiest, most fun and relaxing MG kit I've ever put my hands on. The 3.0 RX-78-2 is also an amazing kit, and looks gorgeous.

>>5803I can't say anything definitive yet since she's only just now standing…but I've been told that it's not that different from the old Powered GM, since they're built on the same kit. It does have some extra b.s in it like a different back which I guess is more similar to the Powered GM? I haven't even taken it off the runner yet though.
Obviously only have three hands kinda sucks but again that's because it's based on an old kit, or so I'm told…she seems sturdy and the articulation isn't exactly optimum thanks to all the heavy armor but I'm really into it. I want to get like a pin vise and a weathering kit and REALLY go to work on these shields…
I did buy the extra pack of weapons and I must say the concept of strapping two heavy Gatling Cannons on the shoulders and giving it a military paint scheme is SUPER enticing.
One thing that I feel the urge to point out though…the sticker sheet isn't big by any means…but oh man is it annoying. I said fuck it to half of them and just tried to paint it. The little V above the codpiece is actually a white sticker over a yellow piece then you have the waist section just below the chest armor, that's a white sticker white a little black "faux panel line".
…not uh…not a fan of that stuff.
>>5804I actually sat and watched that Hobbylink build video of their PG Unicorn and other than thinking to myself "fuck that would take days" I didn't see anything that looked like I couldn't do it…so I imagine a Master Grade should be within my skill set; nice to hear confirmation.
Also, I had been looking at both the Age-1 and the 3.0 of the RX-78-2 just because they looked like something I would want to get into so I'll add them onto the list with Sengoku Astray.

So, this was my first ever build. (Well I say that but when I was younger I built a bunch of the D-Style Zoids models when that show was popular.)
I had no idea what I was getting into so I just decided to get a cheap RX-78-2 and ended up buying a 1/144 RG.
There's nubs all over it because I was just learning at the time. I found an exacto knife to help with the nubs about halfway through the build, so the arms and weapons look better than the torso.
I accidentally threw away the piece that allows him to hold onto the shield so that was a bit of a bummer.
I do have to ask though, did I do something wrong or is the model supposed to feel fragile? Every time I move the legs I feel like the waist pieces are going to fall off.
I did learn that I cannot build 1/144 models though because I have sausage fingers and can't hold onto the tiny pieces. Luckily I had a friend help me with the head and some of the tiny parts on the rest of the body.
I had quite a bit of fun building it. My friend just bought a 1/100 Nu Gundam so I'm looking forward to helping build that.
No.5970
>>5969Considering you built a Real Grade as your first kit, I'd say you did a pretty good job!
You might want to at least try one 1/144 High Grade, considering they don't have as many tiny pieces compared to Real Grades.
Speaking of High Grades, my first kits finally came in, so we'll see how I do for my first builds as well.
I'll post more crummy tablet camera photos later once I've got them built, wish me luck!
No.5974
>>5969Considering you picked a Real Grade for your first build, you did pretty damn well. Just take your team, read then re-read all instructions before doing anything. When you remove from the runners make sure you cut away first, then trim. Two cuts is ALWAYS better than shaving off an important smaller piece.
You should look into building a cool High Grade, like the other /m/an suggested. There are a ton of really cool ones and they're genuinely an easier build. As for fragility, that can depend on the model and the joints. Some feel sturdier than others and there are ways to tighten those joints up if you want to look them up.

>>5969Oh wow, my first RG was intimidating enough. I can't imagine it being my first. It looks great. I decided to see how 1/144 HG's stack up to some old Western market figures I had, as well as a 1/200 HCM Pro Guncannon I got a while back. I also tossed in a Bionicle since that's the biggest size comparison I was wondering about.

Still working on this guy but I thought I would post an update photo. Once I've finished the rest of the construction I'll post another.
Master Grade wasn't as huge a jump as I was lead to believe, you guys were totally right about that. If anything I found the more complex mechanisms much more fun to build. The piston system in the knee for example was really interesting, and just building up armor on a frame and watching how it moved on the final product was super satisfying.
I'll be sad to finish the build and cleanup on this guy. It's been a ton of fun.

I'm thinking of getting about 2 more HG suits (RX 78-2 and maybe Char's Zaku, or a Rick Dias).
My first Master Grade will be a Zaku for sure, in which case I will probably invest in the paints. You don't have to mix paints or do washes etc like with Warhammer do you? You just apply them? (speaking of which, this hobby is more fun and less expensive than warhammer).
These things make me feel like a kid again, I love em.
Sorry for shitty phone pic.

After a month of letting just a build torso sit at my workstation, I went and finished building my MG Gundam X tonight. Fun kit, but the hip joints are an absolute bitch when trying to pose on a stand. The legs pop off so easy.
Gotta get dem marking stickers on tomorrow!
>>6462You don't HAVE to do anything, but depending on the colors you want, the brands of paint and whether or not you want properly thinned paint (tip: you should), then you'll need to do some mixing. It's simple enough.
As an ex-WH40K player, I welcome you, brother. We all appreciate silly Gunpla pictures here, potato quality or not.

No.6500
So I've been wanting to get into Gunpla for a while and my bother got me this by surprise.
I had no idea WTF I was doing. I used toe nail clippers and some random sand paper I found laying around. Tons of fun to build though!
What could I have done better? Other than taking better care of those filthy nubs of course.
No.6501
>>6500Also, what do with sword? Sharpie?
No.6503
>>6500>>6501If you haven't already, read the guide. Lots of good info in there.
You did well with the hand you were dealt. It's an old kit, so the seam lines are shitty, but unless you're willing to use putty, sandpaper and paint, there isn't much you could've done.
You already know the nubs need work. If you plan on continuing with the hobby, go buy an X-Acto knife and some spare blades (Different people use different blades, but #11s are always great). Using that knife, you'll be able to trim down nubs.
Get something that will let you panel line. For a beginner, I suggest Gundam Real Touch Markers (Grey on white plastic. black on darker plastics, brown on red/yellow) or even a properly sized mechanical pencil (I've never used one, so I don't remember the exact size. Lots of people tend to recommend Sakura Microns).
Also get some cheap side cutters to replace the nail clippers. You can get something good like the Xuron 410s for cheap. They'll give you cleaner cuts.
As for the beam saber…it's up to you. Personally, I flat out ignore those old toothpicks. More recent kits have clear beam effect parts. You can paint yours up or just use a sharpie, if you want, though I rarely recommend using sharpies on such large areas.
If you really end up liking this kit, I suggest using a matte coat to take away the plastic shine. It'll make it look like it's been painted. It stops looking like a toy and more like a tiny MS.
I know I just suggested a lot of stuff to buy, but it's stuff you won't have to replace for a while that will improve every kit.
I hope to see more from you.

Also HLJ is currently having another get-rid-of-the-surplus-disguised-as-a-good-value sale that ends in a couple hours. Check it out, they have a fuckton of MSG weapon kits, as well as a bunch of other things, like Majin Bone kits for like 3$.

>>6522LM are kits of "unpopular" stuff, only 5 kits were in the line
Ball K 8th MS
Leo "custom", just a normal leo, Wing
Daughtress, Jenice, and G-Falcon, all from X
I took some pics for you, LM are pretty poor in quality, since they're all 3-steps, and even worse than FG or NG kits, although they do have ok articulation for their age.
The best part about LM is how thick the plastic is, it's got the thickness of 2 40K KITS, HOLY SHIT SON THIS IS TOUGHER THAN NINTENDIUM.
LM need tons of work, they're molded in one color, and since they're 1990 kits, they do need an awful lot of work. I threw together the Ball-K in like 90 seconds, just to show you how they are.
Also I don't really want the Daughtress. I just gladly overpaid for it (15$ for a 800Yen kit) since I like buying old kits.
I was just thinking about keeping it in storage until one day this 8ch /m/and /toy/ pick up so I could try hosting a group build or something since I've been bitching about it.
I mean if nobody wants to do a group build, I'd just be down to trade you for a Zaku 1 or some cheap HG.

I'm going to be giving this guy a custom paint job. I'm thinking a black/grey/white digital camo or maybe just matt black and white for a police motif like the Dingo. I'm definetly going to paint the K-9 Unit white and give it the model number S.H-R0 for my dog Shiro.
I'm looking into getting an airbursh but it's been many a year since I've handled one. (Used to do Warhammer stuff before falling out of the hobby and losing my tools when I moved). Can I get a read on the Iwata HPCS? I've done a bit of research and it seems like a real work horse.

So how do you guys work with stencils when cutting out pla plates? Are you purchasing pre-made ones or sketching out your own? I ended up fucking up the arm of my Sniper K-9 while trying to tighten up the wrist joint, so I ordered a second kit. This way I'll have the bonus shield, a second helmet that I can redo to have Exam Mode, and a lot of secondary weapons and a second dog.
I want to add some sections to the lower and upper parts of the shields to give them a bit more depth and thickness.
