The problem is that they went way overboard. Plus, the whole "Godzilla as a destructive force of nature" thing was kind of lost considering this was one of the more noble portrayals of Big G that we've seen, when you actually look at his actions throughout the movie.
But it's still way better than the '98 movie because we at least got monster action that didn't absolutely suck (it's just most of it wasn't Godzilla), atomic breath, Godzilla that doesn't hide from the fucking military (by running through the subways…?), and a fight at the end that was pretty cool. Zilla was just awful all-around.
