I'm gonna be blunt, I really don't like a lot of mech anime. I've seen pretty much exclusively TTGL, Eva and some others. I'm currently in an anime trade with some pals of mine, and they recommended me Shin Mazinger Shougeki Z Hen. I decided to look it up, and I saw it got pretty solid reviews but the first episode was such a clusterfuck, I had no idea what was going on the entire time. Is it worth watching?

I watched this recently as well, and I have to agree that the first episode was a complete mess.
This series was fairly good imo, but not really something that I can strongly recommend. It overindulges in its own silly plot a little too much, there are some arcs that feel unnecessary, and I honestly felt like it could have used more robot action at times. Episodes 2 to about 5 or or so are great, after that it starts to get bogged down.
Give it a try, but don't be afraid to ditch it if it's not floating your boat. When it comes to anime adaptations of classic mech franchises, I think the best ones are the three most recent adaptations of the Getter Robo series, Armageddon, New Getter Robo, and Shin Getter Robo vs. Neo Getter Robo. Of those, Armageddon is imo the best.

>>7153I am not an expert, but I liked Kotetsushin Jeeg
quite a lot. Manly perverts, plot twists, famous quotes like "why is there fire burning in space?" and "I am so badass I don't need any air to breath!". What's there not to like?
