Yeah, robots are liked, but part of the issue, beyond the "why don't they just use tanks" issue, is that people haven't made the jump that a lot of sci-fi fans had to when they encountered a story that has space fighters actually being manned instead of being drones or whatever. The answer, is of course, because it adds drama and tension. A war between drones might be tense in a video game but for movies it is pretty damn boring; much like how shields are pieces of shit in Star Trek so that they can have explosions throwing everyone places.
