Since there wasn't a thread on it already, lets get one going.

Why the hell does mecha have more fans over here? Mechwarrior is probably the most popular but the majority of it's well known units were swiped from Macross.

>*doesn't

Because people don't know how to suspend disbelief with sci fi weapons that aren't so blatantly fantastic that they might as well be magic.

That's what I get for not reviewing the post first.

Anyway, maybe it's a generational thing? As I was growing up there were mecha everywhere. Power Rangers, Transformers, Mechwarrior, Warhammer… Gundam Wing was enjoying a little popularity over here then as well. But it seems like most people are content to just get their fix from japan these days and any original content just doesn't gain any traction. Pacific Rim was probably the most successful attempt so far.

Maybe the question should be; What are we doing so wrong that our robots aren't as popular?

>What are we doing so wrong that our robots aren't as popular?

They're walking piles of scrap rather than engineered to be sellable to children and collectors.

And anon, robots are popular. Transformers, Star Wars, etc. are all still in the public pop culture psyche.

Yeah, a lot of the mecha in the west is designed to be "gritty" rather than framing a gritty story on what is made to be an attractive set piece and potential model bait like Japan does. Not to say that I don't love me some imperial walkers, but they don't have that same appeal.

Yeah, robots are liked, but part of the issue, beyond the "why don't they just use tanks" issue, is that people haven't made the jump that a lot of sci-fi fans had to when they encountered a story that has space fighters actually being manned instead of being drones or whatever. The answer, is of course, because it adds drama and tension. A war between drones might be tense in a video game but for movies it is pretty damn boring; much like how shields are pieces of shit in Star Trek so that they can have explosions throwing everyone places.

Starwars is still popular for a plethora of reasons, yeah but not for it's giant stompy robots.

>>7393
EA can call it what they like, but they're still wrong. Also what are the mecha on the left and right from? They look like fan-made stuff.

I remember when Symbionic Titan came out a while back, but the hype didn't last very long. Was there ever a verdict on if it was any good or not?

Symbionic Titan was cool enough.

On to another topic because I have a LOT of related pics; I've seen a few dissenting voices here but general consensus is that Pacific Rim was pretty good right? If nothing else it did a lot of things really well like it's blend of CGI and practical effects. For instance, Gipsy Danger's fist bashing through the wall and hitting the Newton's Cradle was a nice bit of practical effect work there.

Yes and no? It's a good analogy for western media outright stealing Asian designs. Looking at you Marvel!

It was solid enough. I loved seeing it over and over at the local dollar theater.

Honestly, though, it's not my favorite anything. It's not my fav robot thing, not my fav monster thing, not even my fav GdT movie.
But it's still a pretty good movie, especially if you catch it on a big screen.

Those are from Universe at War. They are hero units for two of the factions, though the one on the right is a bit silly since the pilot is unnecessary and kind of odd for the faction of actual robots.

hey use what works, why change perfection?

on another note what do you think are the key differences between how east and west approach the mecha genre?

 No.7529

It's interesting comparing eastern vs. western mechs.
Eastern mechs tend to be more artsy in design and definitely like their lasers.
Western mechs tend to be blocky walking tanks more often than not.
I think western mechs tend to be grittier is because we actually consider some use for them in war, mainly as infantry support.

Supreme Commander had a very japanese aesthetic to its Armored Command Units imo, very humanoid, lots of flat surfaces. That kinda stuff. Then for the sequel Supcom got published by Square Enix so I guess it showed even in grorious nippon.

I also like Hawken's mech designs a lot, although I wish all the mech classes had as much diversity between models as the medium class. Heavies especially more or less all look the same, but lots of lights just kinda look like metal chicken.
