Now /m/onstrosities, I know next to nothing about gundam and mecha outside Evangelion though I have the feeling the former are probably more suited to my taste and I want to read/watch whatever gundam series might have to do with the design of this statue.

Or did this fucker just pull the design out of the wazoo?

It's a kitbash instead of one specific MS. I think it's a Zaku 1 with two shoulder pads and an alternate head.

It's definitely based on a Zaku from the first Gundam series. The helmet is unique though. >>7522 has good eyes, I would have guessed the same thing.

It looks to be a Zaku 2 chest, Zaku 1 arms and legs, and a tetsujin 28 head given a zaku mono-eye.

Watch early UC stuff for Gundam. Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, ZZ Gundam, and Char's Counter Attack. If you watch them one after another ZZ is going to feel really weird after Zeta.

The 3 movies for the original series are good, and if you don't want to commit to 43 episodes of something you might not like that could be a good place to start, although I do suggest watching the TV show if you like the movies. The Zeta movies change the plot of the show instead of just cutting some filler, so I would watch those AFTER the TV show if you feel the need too.

There's tons more, but that's pretty much the core set.
