Why is open Tanyao the best hand?

 No.88

remove open tanyao

 No.89

I'm in riichi to get a baiman.

Also, I find open tanyao is nice for beginners since it makes it easier to get a hand.

 No.93

I had a non-dealer in 4th place tanyao-only all over me while I was building a suu ankou in all last. Of course he didn't make a fucking comeback in case you were wondering.

I'm so shit at this I don't even have the luxury of being able to pick safe tiles to discard while building my hand because I can't even get to tenpai when discarding whatever I feel like.

I don't know if I'm going senile or something but that was a messy ass post. Anyways, post some tenhou replays or something so us puro gyanburas can give you hardcore tips on how to become a cool kid.

ok people help me counting this.

It's a Kazeo-yakuman but I don't know where all the han come from. So it is Tsumo +1, Chin-Itsu +6, 2 red fives +2, Ittsuu +2, a total of 11 han. 2 han are left. Did I miss a yaku or might those 2 missing han come from things not shown like Dora or Riichi?

 No.61

>>59

The only other thing I can see in that hand is iipeikou, but I don't believe that'd be counted as it's 11-123-345-456-789, so the extra han must come from some circumstatial yaku or dora.

 No.73

You forgot pinfu: pinfu, tsumo, chinitsu, ittsuu, aka 2. If the riichi was declared it's at least a 13 han kazoe yakuman.

1. What is Zung Jung mahjong?

Zung Jung is a modern rules system developed by Alan Kwan. It takes all the best developments of modern mahjong, particularly the rich variety of yaku from Riichi mahjong, and synthesizes them into a much more logical, deliberate set of rules. It means "The MiddLE Way" in Confucian doctrine.

2. Why is Zung Jung better than Riichi?

- No excessive emphasis on closed hands.
- Hand values are actually balanced towards the difficulty of achieving them. There aren't any "bad yaku," where the point value is out of line with the difficulty of achieving it (ex., chanta in Riichi).
- Less random luck which doesn't add to the game's strategy (no ura dora, double riichi, ippatsu riichi, etc).
- A much more elegant set of rules, without tons of archaic exceptions (ex., abortive draws)

3. Where can I learn more about it?

http://home.netvigator.com/~tarot/Mahjong/ZungJung/#English

I personally recommend playing Zung Jung with minimum point requirements = 5 and standard score value = 0. This best captures the feel of "like Riichi, but better." It's how I always play mahjong with my friendS IRL.

 No.32

Only internet recluses play Zung Jung. It's the same 10 guys talking about it with no significant public live group.

The only exception to that is "World Series of Mahjong" which AFAIK died.

The system is fine but it's just another store brand of ketchup when Heinz makes a perfectly good product.

 No.34

>- Less random luck which doesn't add to the game's strategy (no ura dora, double riichi, ippatsu riichi, etc).

People who regularly played in the WSOM said that ZJ mahjong has even more luck than Japanese…

 No.67

IMO it's pointless to play Zung Jung in the same way as it's pointless to play dead trading card games: It doesn't matter how good the game is if nobody is playing it. Also, I'm not convinced that Zung Jung is better and more skillful than Riichi. Alan Kwan and his fan boys appear to be pretty douchebaggy too claiming as a fact that ZJ is better than Riichi in every way. Riichi is clearly a very skillful game that many people around the world love. It just comes down to personal preferences which one you like better.

Can anyone explain why this isn't a winning hand? It's Japanese Mahjong and I just drew into this I'm so lost on why the game won't let me call Ron. I have 4 runs and a head right?

 No.36

I just started playing last night (with the same game, no less) and basically what happened is your hand isn't worth at least 1 Yaku.

Your hand is open (that is, you pon'd or chi'd someone at least once) which degrades the value of most common hands by 1 Yaku.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Mahjong_yaku#Yaku_based_on_sequences
Note the last column: if it's "Closed only" then you can't win with that hand if you've stolen.

If you had drawn all of those tiles (not stole) then you would've won. As-is, you need to do something else to make a winning hand.

An easy hand to make that allows stealing is the "All Simples" hand: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Mahjong_yaku#Yaku_based_on_terminal_or_honor_tiles

Unfortunately, you have a set of 3 9s and a sequence with a 1 in it, so you don't qualify.

 No.42

No yaku

When you have a yaku but you still cant call, you're probably in furietin

 No.54

I'm guessing this is a good thread for beginner questions, when I'm trying to call Ron on gamedesign.jp game I'm getting the message 'no multiplier'. Is that saying I didn't have a yaku?

 No.55

exactly

I thought so. I was confused by the language. Thanks.

I don't have a camera, but here we just use a wooden square on top of a table. I got the inspiration after watching that live action Akagi movie.

You might wanna use some chairs where you can rest your back tho, it'll start to hurt after a while.

Currently waiting for one of these darlings. Until then, all I have is a plain white IKEA table.
