This board is for discussing the game of mahjong - the 4-player Asian rummy game, not that tile-matching solitaire you see in every damn app store.

Rules:
1. Don't be a dick.
2. No shitposting.
3. Stay on topic.
4. Keep it SFW.

Useful links:
http://tenhou.net/ - Play Japanese mahjong online.
http://arcturus.su/tenhou/ - Documentation for the above.
http://sloperama.com/mjfaq.html - Information on most variations of mahjong.
http://gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html - Play Japanese mahjong against the computer - useful for learning the rules.
(If you'd like to suggest any links to add, do so in this thread.)

I want to get into Mah Jong and I wanted to buy a physical set. I am also cheap so I checked good old friend AliExpress(it's even Chinese mostly). There are loads of sets but I was wondering whether someone already bought any of them? If you did, what were your experiences? I found nice set of tiles for around 30 euros with shipping and that seems pretty cool. I learnt about Mah Jong from Akagi by the way.

There's mine, I can't send out friend requests since my Steam account is locked up since I am not giving my sheekels to big daddy Gaben like a good goy. I don't enter Steam often so it may not be reliable. When can you play? I see you are from USA so our timezones differ. You should be 6 hours before us, so hours around 12 pm or earlier should do fine for my zone.

Hey /mahjong/, first time making a thread so I hope I don't fuck up everything.

What do you guys use when you wanna get someone into learning japanese mahjong? We could use some newcomers.

If I can't teach them in person, I use this page:

http://www.japanesemahjong.com/reachmahjong/intro.htm

It's easy to understand and pretty well organized too, so if the person you're teaching doesn't wanna do real life stuff yet you can tell them what chapters to skip and which are the most important.

The Yaku page of that site is pretty bad, though, so I tell them to learn the Yakus at http://arcturus.su/wiki/List_of_yaku

 No.97

>>96

Hmm, it's a rule variation but most places allow it. However it's also pretty rare and not something you can really play around, and most pc/browser games would prompt you anyway, so i don't feel it's worth mentioning in a cheatsheet.

So I'm at a point where I finally can play without making (huge) mistakes. My problem: I can hardly read discards.

I can somewhat read open hands, but just the obvious ones. I was so incredible proud when detected that open San-Shouku-Dou-Jun waiting on 456 pin you wont believe it.

There is this 1-4-7, 2-5-8, 3-6-9 thing, but that doesn't always work.

> *opponents discards 4 pin*

> *I discard 7 pin*

> "Ron. Was a nice trap, that 4 pin, wasn't it?"

> "What?"

> remember this 1-4-7 thingy

> "Oh yeah, sure" (would have played the 7pin anyway)

I've got told that discards near the tile someone declared riichi on are usually dangerous too. But that's still pretty basic.

So, do you have any tips on how to learn to predict what is on others hands? Or at least a way to start learning?

pic related, it's me

Oh, maybe I misread the rules then; I thought temporary furiten was for that turn, but I guess it's for that tile and that turn?

 No.118

>>117

Riichi furiten means if you pass on a winning tile you can't ron with that hand anymore, in regular furiten you can't ron if one of your winning tiles is on your discards.

Temporary furiten comes if you get riichiless tenpai and you pass on a ron, then you can't ron until your next discard.

 No.119

>>118

Oh I see, it's for riichiless tenpai only.

 No.140

Reading discards is something you shouldn't bother to try doing until you're at a certain high level. Just focus on tile efficiency and basic defense, those two will take you very far.

Since getting a new rank on tenhou I've placed 2nd in all the games I've played, not lower and not higher.

At the end of each game it says +8 or +16 or whatever, which I presume is the points I should've gained, but I'm not getting any points. On the interface it still says 0pt.

Do I need to get 1st place in a game before it lets me move up again or what's going on?

 No.139

That +8 or +16 is just your game score, it has nothing to do with your rank points.

I can't believe an open hon-itsu + yakuhai is worth the same as a ryanpeikou.

How the fuck is ryanpeikou only 3 han? That shit is so much harder to get.

 No.58

>>57

I know that feeling too well, especially since iipeikou is my most satisfying yaku.

It's kinda like when you have this gigantic baiman or sanbaiman, then you realize you can turn your hand into a specific yakuman with a bit more effort, but that would kill every other yaku so it would feel like shit even though you're getting more.

 No.70

Maybe it's based on the available tiles? Hon-Itsu is one suit with which means 36 tiles, Yakuhai has 12 Dragon tiles + 8 possible wind tiles, a total of 56 tiles.

While Ryanpeikou is limited by the menzen and sequence-requirement, it can be built with all three sets, so you have a total 108 tiles to use.

 No.123

>>70

There are more available tiles, but you also need to be way more specific with your available tiles. Once you've got two sequences in two suits, you've then effectively got to fulfill six separate waits to complete your ryanpeikou, of which each wait has a maximum of 3 tiles remaining, so at most six groups of 3, or 18 tiles, and if all three of any of those groups are drawn by other players or in the dead wall, your ryanpeikou is impossible to complete.

Kokushi is weird, I haven't seen one online ever, because usually when a player gets enough different honors in their hand at the start they'll call for the draw instead of gunning for it.

Maybe you're playing against people who don't know mahjong/japanese well enough, so they see this bigass button in their starting hands and they think "i gotta press this to see what it does".
